The village of Tagounite experienced a staggering 100 millimetres of rainfall in just 24 hours. This single-day downpour surpasses the total annual precipitation typically seen in many neighbouring areas of the region. Meteorologists call this occurrence highly unusual, as it occurred during the late summer season. The flood in Sahara Desert has caused significant disruption to local communities and ecosystems too.
Weather experts say that this kind of rain is very unusual for Morocco’s desert areas. Houssine Youabeb, an official at Morocco’s weather office, says they haven’t seen rain like this in many years. Some scientists think this might be a sign that the weather in this area is changing. They say there might be more moisture in the air now, which could mean more storms in the Sahara Desert in Morocco in the future.
The recent rainfall in Sahara Desert and subsequent flooding stress the changing climate patterns in the region.
