Why is a Permit Required?

The requirement for a permit to visit Rohtang Pass stems from the environmental regulations enforced by the National Green Tribunal (NGT). Due to the delicate ecological balance of the area, including its fragile flora and fauna, a limited number of vehicles are allowed to travel to and beyond the pass. These regulations are designed to preserve the natural beauty and minimise the environmental impact caused by tourism in this pristine region.

Types of Permits:

  • Permit for Rohtang Pass: This permit allows travellers to visit Rohtang Pass and return to Manali within 24 hours. It is ideal for those who want to explore the pass itself, enjoy the views, and participate in snow activities.
  • Permit for Beyond Rohtang Pass: This permit is required for vehicles that plan to travel beyond Rohtang Pass, towards the Lahaul/Spiti Valley or Leh. It grants access to areas that are connected through the pass, with further travel into these regions being regulated.

How to Obtain Your Rohtang Pass Permit Online

Here are the steps on how you can obtain a Rohtang Pass permit online:

  1. Step 1: Visit the Official Website: To begin the permit application process, visit the Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (HPTDC) permit portal.
  2. Step 2: Registration/Login: If you are a new user, you will need to register on the portal. If you already have an account, simply log in to proceed with your permit application.
  3. Step 3: Select Permit Type & Date: Choose the type of permit you need (Rohtang Pass Only or Beyond Rohtang) and select the date for which you need the permit.
  4. Step 4: Provide Vehicle & Personal Details: You will need to enter details such as your vehicle number, vehicle type, driver’s name, passenger count, and valid ID proof (Aadhar card, passport, or driver’s license).
  5. Step 5: Upload Documents: Upload necessary documents, including a valid ID proof (Aadhar card, passport, or driver’s license), Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate, and the vehicle registration certificate.
  6. Step 6: Pay the Fee: The permit comes with an INR 500 environmental charge per vehicle, as per NGT guidelines. You may also need to pay additional congestion charges if applicable. Payments can be made securely via the online portal.
  7. Step 7: Download & Print Permit: Once the payment is confirmed, download your permit and print a physical copy. Ensure you carry it with you during your trip, as it will be checked by authorities.

  • There is a limited number of permits being issued each day to preserve the environment.
  • It’s advisable to book your permit at least 24-48 hours in advance, as permits are released on a first-come, first-served basis.

  • Summer (May-Oct):During the summer months, the temperatures at Rohtang Pass range from 10°C to 25°C during the day, making it quite pleasant for outdoor activities. The chilly evenings can bring temperatures down, so it's best to be prepared for temperature variations.
  • Winter (Nov-Apr):Winter brings freezing temperatures, with day temperatures ranging from -2°C to 10°C at the lower accessible points.
