So, let’s learn more about Ross Island Andaman Nicobar and know more about why it is a popular tourist destination with the number of things to do here in this travel guide.
Named after Sir Daniel Ross – a marine surveyor in the late 18th century, the island served as a crucial administrative center for the British during their rule in India. This island was first occupied in 1782 but was not put to use except that a sanatorium was built here. Later, Ross Island served as a British capital from 1858 to 1941.
During this time frame, many government offices, residences, ballrooms, bakeries, etc were built on this island. It was like a small British colony settled on this tiny island. Unfortunately, the island faced challenges during World War II, including an earthquake in 1941 and subsequent Japanese occupation in World War II.
But later, the Japanese force abandoned Ross Island. In 1945, during India’s Independence struggle the Indian allies reclaimed the island and rebuilt some of the buildings, which now play a major role in supporting the tourism scenario on this Ross Island Andaman.
In 2018, Prime Minister Narendra Modi renamed the Ross Island as Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Island in memory of the great freedom fighter Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose. Despite the shift in nomenclature, the island continues to be a living museum, preserving the architectural marvels of a bygone era. The remnants of colonial structures, including a church, ballroom, and chief commissioner’s residence, still echo the island’s storied past.
Today, Ross Island has become a captivating tourism destination, drawing visitors with its blend of history, nature, and tranquility. The well-preserved ruins and lush greenery make it a unique attraction, offering glimpses into the colonial era and the struggle for India’s independence. The island’s strategic location in the Andaman Sea, coupled with its historical significance, adds to its allure for both history enthusiasts and nature lovers.

“I did my first solo trip in India with WanderOn. Initially I was sceptical about their Meghalaya-Kaziranga trip as I didn't have any prior experience with them but the team assured me that it's going to be one of the best experiences of my life.

“In Ladakh, find the perfect blend of culture, adventure, and serenity. December last year I decided that my next trip would be Ladakh but didn’t know how to go about it. I knew I wanted to travel in a group, as I had prior experiences of traveling in a group but wanted an organiser I could trust. Ladakh isn’t like other destinations wherein you need some instructions due to the high altitudes.

The place was very beautiful and the quality of service was top-notch, the itinerary was very good and the quality of transportation and stays were very good. Had an awesome time there and made some good friends as well. Lastly, our trip captains Priyasha and Rachit managed the entire trip very well and were so fun and made our trip an experience worth remembering.
