Rutland Island, Andaman 2025: How to Reach, Activities to Do, and More!

Just a stone’s throw (well, 20 kilometers) from the busy Port Blair is Rutland Island, making it one of the lesser-known places to visit in Port Blair, a weird paradise that was forgotten in the 21st century. Its neighbor, South Andaman Island, greets modern life on the other side of the Macpherson Strait, while Rutland, as if stubborn, holds on to one foot in the past, like that weird uncle who cannot imagine having a smartphone.

Once home to the enigmatic Jangil tribe (who mysteriously disappeared into the annals of time), this time-traveling marvel now plays host to six villages spread across its landscape. It’s a bit like the real version of “Lost,” minus the smoke monster, but with lots of other mysteries waiting to be solved.

Our Andaman tour packages include day trips to Rutland Island, making it easy to visit. Consider Rutland Island the last day trip in Port Blair destination in the Andamans – where you snorkel with tropical fish in the morning and get a glimpse of clean beaches in Andaman by afternoon while still making it back to Port Blair in time for dinner. It is a choose-your-own-adventure book that comes alive, except every choice leaves you in awe. Exploring marine life here is one of the exciting things to do in Andaman.

Rutland Island is one of those refreshing places that remind us, in overtourism and Instagram hotspots, that at times the best places aren’t those caught up with the tide of time, but rather when things haven’t yet caught on. It is not just an island; it’s a time machine with really great swimming spots.

Visitors have to obtain their Restricted Area Permit and formalities in Port Blair itself, before visiting Rutland Island. Indian citizens do not need any permit to visit the Andaman & Nicobar Islands (entry to the tribal reserve area is barred for Indians also). However, residents of foreign countries who are originators of Afghanistan, Pakistan, and China would need the Restricted Area Permit (RAP) to visit Rutland Island, which is granted after the approval of the Ministry of Home Affairs.
