Their love story began when they met in their youth, leading to a passionate romance. They got married in 1612, but life took a sad turn. After giving birth to their 14th child (yes, 14!), Mumtaz sadly passed away in 1631. Shah Jahan was heartbroken, and in his grief, he decided to build a monument to honor her memory and show their love.
He was so heartbroken that he declared a period of mourning for the entire empire. According to the Shah Jahanama of Inayat Khan, after Mumtaz’s passing, Shah Jahan even stopped listening to music. He cried so much that his eyes became weak!
Construction of the Taj Mahal began in 1632, and it took a massive 22 years to finish! Thousands of workers put in countless hours, turning Shah Jahan’s dream into reality. Even after so many years of marriage, Shah Jahan’s love for Mumtaz Mahal never faded. It was as strong as ever, proving that true love doesn’t diminish over time.
Legends say that Mumtaz Mahal wished for a tomb that would be remembered forever after her death. Some say Shah Jahan took it upon himself to make her wish come true! Yes, you read that right! The Taj Mahal is actually a tomb, and inside, you’ll find Mumtaz’s grave. And guess what? Shah Jahan’s cenotaph is right next to her after his passing! Materials
Let’s talk about the materials. The Taj Mahal is mainly made from white marble that comes from Makrana in Rajasthan. This marble shines like a diamond in the sun—if diamonds could be used for building! And it doesn’t stop there. The intricate designs include precious stones like lapis lazuli, jade, and turquoise!
Design and Layout
The layout of the Taj Mahal is based on a Mughal garden, symbolizing paradise on Earth. The main mausoleum is on a raised platform, surrounded by pathways, fountains, and flowers—perfect for a stroll or a romantic picnic.
Dome and Minarets
One of the most eye-catching features of the Taj Mahal Agra is its grand dome, which rises about 35 meters (115 feet). The dome is accompanied by four tall minarets, each about 40 meters (131 feet). These minarets are not just there for decoration; they help balance the structure.
And let’s not forget the classic tourist moment—you know, the one where you pretend to hold up the top of the dome with your hands. It’s a must for any visitor! Nothing says “I was at the Taj Mahal” quite like that iconic shot, proving that you can defy gravity and architecture all at once!
Intricate Details
Every part of the Taj Mahal is covered in beautiful carvings and fancy calligraphy. The marble surfaces are inlaid with delicate floral patterns and verses from the Quran. It’s like a giant art project that took decades to complete with very keen attention to detail.
