Some destinations get popular through their size. Ti Top Island Vietnam earns it through something far more powerful - history, beauty and a story that connects a Soviet cosmonaut, a Vietnamese president and one of the most spectacular natural wonders on earth.

Covering 8 hectares and rising 110 meters above Ha Long Bay’s beautiful waters, this small crescent-shaped island offers a powdery beach with a 450 step summit trail and amazing views. Originally called Cat Nang Island, it was renamed in 1962 by President Ho Chi Minh in honour of Soviet cosmonaut Gherman Titov- the second human ever to orbit the Earth, during his goodwill visit to Vietnam.

History of Ti Top Island - How it Got its Name

Blog image

Before it became a Ha Long Bay favourite, Ti Top Island Vietnam was simply a quiet limestone island called Cat Nang. That changed in 1962 when President Ho Chi Minh invited Soviet cosmonaut Gherman Titov - the second human to orbit Earth, on a boat trip through Ha Long Bay. As a gesture of Vietnam-Soviet friendship, Ho Chi Minh renamed the island in Titov's honour on the spot.

Ti Top is simply a Vietnamese-friendly adaptation of the name Titov. In 1997, Titov returned to the island and wrote in the visitors' book, deeply moved to see his name carried by one of the most beautiful places to visit in Vietnam.

Things to Do at Ti Top Island Vietnam

1.Hike to the Summit Viewpoint

You can go and climb approximately 400-450 steep stone steps to reach the 110-meter peak. This summit offers you the most iconic 360 degree view of the limestone karsts and cruise ships in the central bay.

Tip: there is a shaded pavilion halfway at about 200 steps for those who want a view without the full climb.

2.Relax at Ti Top Beach

You can swim or sunbathe on the 170 meter long crescent of powdery white sand. The waters are very well sheltered and calm, making it among the safe places for swimming for all kinds of people and one of the best beaches in Vietnam to spend some time!

Tip: bring your own microfiber towel. Rentals on the island can be pricey or run out during peak afternoon hours.

3.Kayaking and water sports

Rent a kayak which is approximately 150,000 VND/hour to explore hidden coves and limestone cliffs up close. Then, there are other adrenaline pumping options which include banana boat rides, jet skiing and seasonal paragliding.

Tip: if you are kayaking in Vietnam, you should paddle away from the cruise ship path. The wake from the large boats can make the water choppy and difficult for beginners. Also, negotiate the price for jet skis or banana boats if you are in bigger groups.

4.Visit the Gherman Titov Statue

Located at the foot of the mountain near the pier, this 6-meter granite statue commemorates the friendship between Vietnam and the Soviet Union.

Tip: You should buy your water and snacks on the cruise ship before you get off. Also, have smaller VND denominations for the freshwater shower fee for quick snacks, as vendors often struggle to find change for bills.

To reach Ti Top Island, you must first travel to Ha Long City (specifically Tuan Chau Marina or Bai Chay Wharf) and then take a boat, as the island is located approximately 7–8 kilometres offshore in the heart of Ha Long Bay.

Step 1: Go to Ha Long City

Most of the travelers prefer to start from Hanoi, which is located about 150 km away.

  • By shuttle/limousine: It is the most common way and many of the Ha long Bay tours also include round-trip transfers from Hanoi’s old Quarter via the expressway, taking roughly 2-2.5 hours.
  • By Private Car/Taxi: Offers the most flexibility and takes about 2.5 hours.
  • By Public Bus: Regular buses depart from Hanoi's My Dinh or Gia Lam stations, taking approximately 4 hours.
  • By Air: The nearest airport is Van Don International (VDO), about 50 km from the city.

Step 2: Take a Boat to the Island

The Ti Top Island is only accessible by water.

  • Day cruise tours: It is the most popular way and these boats depart from Tuan Chau Marina or Bai Chay and follow “Route 2”, which specifically includes Ti Top Island along with Sung Sot Cave.
  • Overnight cruises: There are many 2-day/1 night or 3day/2night Ha long Bay cruises which also includes adventure activities like hiking and swimming.
  • Private Speedboat or Chartered Boat: For total control over your schedule, you can rent a private boat from the wharf. Prices for chartered boats typically range from VND 500,000 to 700,000 per hour.
  • Seaplane: For a luxury experience, seaplanes depart from Tuan Chau Marina, offering a 25-minute scenic flight over the island.

Costs for Visiting Ti Top Island

  • Island Entrance Fee: Included in most tour packages; otherwise, it is roughly VND 60,000–100,000 per person.
  • Day Tour Price: Ranges from ₹2,000 to ₹10,000 depending on the level of luxury and whether transfers from Hanoi are included.

Best Time to Visit Ti Top Island

The best time to visit Ti Top Island is during the shoulder seasons of May to September. During these months, the weather is mild (20–28°C), the skies are clear for summit photography, and the seas are calm enough for safe kayaking and swimming

Seasonal Breakdown

  • Peak Season (October – April): This is the dry season in Northern Vietnam.
  • Highlights: Clear blue skies and stable weather make this the safest time to climb the 450 stone steps.
  • Considerations: December to February can be chilly (15–20°C) and misty. While the mist adds a "mystical" atmosphere to the limestone karsts, it can sometimes obscure the panoramic view from the summit.
  • Summer Season (May – September): Characterized by hot, humid weather (often exceeding 30°C).
  • Highlights: The warm water is ideal for swimming and water sports.
  • Considerations: This is typhoon season. Sudden tropical storms can lead to last-minute cruise cancellations or restricted access to the island. August is typically the wettest month.

Best Time of Day to Avoid Crowds

Ti Top is a major stop for almost every cruise, meaning it can get extremely crowded midday.

  • Early Morning (7:30 AM – 9:00 AM): Arrive with an "Early Bird" slot to enjoy the island in the cool morning air before the large day-tour crowds arrive from the mainland.
  • Late Afternoon (4:30 PM – 5:30 PM): Known as the "Golden Hour," this time offers the best lighting for photography and a more peaceful atmosphere as day-trippers depart

Travel Tips When Visiting Ti Top Island

  • Arrive early: The first boats dock at 7 AM, so it is the best time to beat the crowds, get quieter beaches and shorter queues on the Ti Top Island viewpoint trail.
  • Wear non-slip shoes: the 450-step hike to the viewpoint is steep and can get slippery, flip-flops are a bad idea.
  • Don’t skip the summit: The Ti Top island viewpoint is one of Ha Long Bay's best vantage points, 360-degree views of limestone karsts and emerald water await at the top.
  • Hike first, swim later: If your stop is under 2 hours, prioritise the viewpoint hike first, then cool off at the beach on the way back
  • Pack your own supplies: Food stalls exist but are limited and pricey, eat on your cruise before arriving, and carry sunscreen, a towel, and a waterproof phone case
  • Book the right cruise: Ti Top sits on Ha Long Bay Route 2 - confirm your Ti Top island Vietnam tour specifically includes it alongside Sung Sot Cave and Luon Cave.
  • Go overnight, not day cruise: Overnight cruises give you more time at Tip Top island Ha Long Bay, quieter morning access, and Ha Long Bay at dawn, worth every extra rupee
  • Best season: October to April, clear skies, calm seas, and ideal temperatures for both hiking and swimming
  • Avoid jellyfish season: June to August brings jellyfish to the beach, check with your cruise operator before swimming during these months
  • No drones without permission: Ti Top sits inside a UNESCO World Heritage Site, drone flights require prior approval from Ha Long Bay authorities
  • Time needed: 2–3 hours is ideal, enough to hike, swim, and soak in the views without rushing.
