Toorji Ka Jhalra Bavdi has to be one of the must-visit attractions in your Rajasthan trip package. Toorji Ka Jhalra also known as Toorji’s Stepwell is an architectural wonder in the heart of Jodhpur, Rajasthan. 

Built-in the 18th century by the queen of Maharaja Abhay Singh, this stepwell holds great historical and cultural significance. It is a great place to relax, admire the art, and learn history. Explore its interesting architecture, timings, location, and the best places to visit nearby!

Toorji Ka Jhalra History

The history of Toorji Ka Jhalra in Jodhpur dates back to the 18th century. This architectural masterpiece was built by the queen of Maharaja Abhay Singh in the 1740s. The goal was to provide fresh water resources to the kingdom. 

The meaningful step design made it easy for people to access water. People not only used water from here but also used it to escape from intense desert heat. 

Though it was initially built to be the water source, it gained popularity and became one of the most popular tourist attractions in Jodhpur, Rajasthan today. 

Cultural events like music and dance performances will also be held at the stepwell. Visitors from worldwide admire the stepwell for its stunning architecture and the art(beautifully carved on the walls).

Toorji Ka Jhalra Architecture

Toorji Ka Jhalra in Jodhpur is the best example of ancient engineering and art. This 18th-century step well is one of the oldest and biggest step wells in India. It is a blend of 3 architectural styles: Mughal, Rajput, and Maratha. 

Toorji Ka Jhalra was built using rose-red sandstone. It is 7 stories deep and supported by limestone pillars. The top two floors are open and used as pavilions. The step well was designed in a way that it provides water to people even during droughts. The stepwell also features balconies and incredible carvings of Hindu Gods and stories from Indian Mythology.

Best Time To Visit Toorji Ka Jhalra   

Toorji Ka Jhalra in Jodhpur is open throughout the day as the locals visit it to bathe and swim. Everyone is welcome to visit this stepwell. However, visit Toorji Ka Jhalra before evening to be able to completely admire its architecture and between October to March when the weather is pleasant. 

How To Reach Toorji Ka Jhalra?

  • By Air: 

The nearest airport is Jodhpur Airport. From the airport, you can take local transport like a bus or a cab to reach Toorji Ka Jhalra, which is about a 30-minute journey. 

  • By Train: 

You can take a train to Jodhpur Railway Station from various cities across India. From the train station, you can take a cab or auto rickshaw which is around a 15-minute ride to Toorji Ka Jhalra. 

  • By Road:

Buses are available from nearby cities to reach Jodhpur. Once in Jodhpur, you can hire a cab to take you to the Toorji Ka Jhalra in about 20 minutes.

1. Ghanta Ghar

Ghanta Ghar, also called the Clock Tower of Rajasthan, is an important landmark in Jodhpur. It is located next to the busy Sardar Market, which is named after Maharaja Sardar Singh. This historical tower offers great views of the whole city.

2. Mehrangarh Fort 

Mehrangarh Fort is a big fort on top of a hill at 410 feet in Jodhpur, Rajasthan. Rao Jodha built it in 1459.  The fort has thick walls that have seen many battles. Inside the fort, there are several palaces with beautiful carvings and large open spaces called courtyards.

3. Umaid Bhawan Palace

Umaid Bhawan Palace is an impressive historical landmark in Jodhpur on top of Chittar Hill. The palace was finished in 1943 and named after a past ruler, Maharaja Umaid Singh. 

This large palace is made of yellow sandstone. It has a beautiful combination of Eastern and Western architectural styles.

4. Jaswant Thada

This building is made of white marble. Maharaja Sardar Singh built it in the 19th century to honour his father. It has a great architecture that looks a bit like a temple. 

5. Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park

This park covers a large area of 72 acres close to Mehrangarh Fort.  It has plants that naturally grow in dry and desert areas. People created the park in 2006 to bring back the original plant life to the rocky land near the fort. Visitors were first allowed to enter the park in February 2011.
