German Tourists Arrested For Defecating In A Hotel Elevator And Causing Damage

Two young German tourists arrested for defecating in a hotel in Mallorca, Spain.  The tourists in their 20s caused major damage to the hotel by using the elevator as a toilet, setting off fire extinguishers, destroying a mattress, and damaging furniture. The hotel reported the incident to local police and estimated the damage would cost about 46,000 Indian Rupees( approx) to repair.

The two German tourists spent a night in jail, according to local news reports. They were later released on bail. This incident highlights the pattern of bad tourist behaviour worldwide.

Similar Incidents From Across The World

  1. The incident of tourists arrested for damaging hotel in Mallorca is not the first. In another recent case, visitors to Cambodia’s ancient Angkor Wat temple have mimicked the mobile game “Temple Run” at the sacred site.  Videos of tourists running through the temple like characters in the game have gone viral, with millions of views online. These events highlight the growing problem of tourists disrespecting cultural sites and local laws while travelling.
  2. Earlier this year, security at Italy’s famous Pompeii ruins caught a tourist from Kazakhstan carving his name into an ancient wall. The man etched “ALI” onto the House of the Ceii, a part of the well-preserved Roman city. He was quickly stopped by guards and faced strong criticism for damaging the archaeological site.
  3. In 2023, a group of German tourists made headlines for destroying a valuable statue in Italy. Security cameras recorded the incident at a bed and breakfast. The statue crashed to the ground, suffering major damage.
  4. In another shocking incident, a Russian visitor to Bali faced consequences for disrespecting local customs. The tourist climbed Mount Agung, a volcano considered sacred by Balinese people.

He took a photo of himself on the mountain with his trousers down. Local authorities took swift action in response to the disrespectful act. The Russian man was deported from Bali and received a 6-month ban from re-entering the country.

These incidents stress the importance of respecting local cultures and religious sites when travelling abroad. It also shows how social media posts lead to serious consequences for tourists who break local laws or customs.
