The temple was built by the Bochasanwasi Shri Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS), a Hindu spiritual organization, and was inaugurated in 2005.  

 The first Akshardham temple was built in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, in 1992. The Delhi temple was built under the guidance of Pramukh Swami Maharaj, the spiritual head of BAPS at the time.

The construction of the Akshardham temple in Delhi took five years and involved the labor of over 11,000 artisans and volunteers. The temple was inaugurated on November 6, 2005, by Pramukh Swami Maharaj in the presence of then-Prime Minister of India, Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

  • Embarking on a Spiritual Journey through Exhibitions: The Akshardham complex houses three captivating exhibitions that delve into the life and teachings of Swaminarayan and explore the rich tapestry of Indian culture.
  • Sahajanand Darshan (Hall of Values): This 55-minute experience uses animatronics, films, and interactive exhibits to showcase the life and values of Swaminarayan. 
  • Neelkanth Darshan (Large Format Film): This 45-minute presentation utilizes a giant IMAX screen to showcase the life of Swaminarayan as Neelkanth, a form of Shiva. The film employs special effects and a captivating storyline to bring this episode to life.
  • Sanskruti Darshan (Cultural Boat Ride): This 15-minute boat ride takes visitors on a mesmerizing journey through the history and culture of India. Through meticulously crafted scenes and narration, the ride depicts ancient 
  • Experiencing Tranquility at the Yagnapurush Kund:  This traditional step-well, with its 2870 steps and intricate carvings, serves as the stage for the Sahaj Anand Water Show.  
  • Enjoying a meal at the temple’s restaurant: The temple has a restaurant that serves a variety of vegetarian dishes. This restaurant in Delhi is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

The Akshardham Temple in Delhi can be reached by several means of transportation. The nearest metro station is Akshardham Temple, which is on the Blue Line. The temple can also be reached by bus or taxi.

Timings of the Temple

The Akshardham Temple is open from 10 am to 7:00 pm and is closed every Monday.

Ticket Price

There is no entry fee for the Akshardham Temple. However, there is a fee for the museum, the theatre, and the water show. The fee for the exhibitions is Rs. 250 for adults and Rs. 150 for children. The fee for the water show for adults is Rs 90 and Rs 60 for children.

Tips for Visiting Akshardham Temple

  • Dress modestly when visiting the temple.
  • Any electronic item is not allowed inside the temple premises and must be submitted in the cloakroom
  • Photography is not allowed inside the temple.
  • Visitors are required to remove their shoes before entering the temple.
  • There is a security check at the entrance of the temple.
  • Visitors are not allowed to bring food or drinks (except water ) into the temple.
