The history of Ascension Cathedral Almaty dates back to the early 20th century. Construction began in 1904 and was completed in 1907. The cathedral was designed by the prominent architect Andrei Pavlovich Zenkov, after whom it is often called Zenkov Cathedral Almaty. Built when Kazakhstan was part of the Russian Empire, it served the spiritual needs of the Russian Orthodox community in Almaty, then known as Verny.

Ascension Cathedral’s history is marked by resilience. The cathedral is made entirely of wood, including the nails. This construction technique was chosen for its flexibility, allowing the building to withstand earthquakes. This was proven in 1911 when a massive earthquake struck the region, but Ascension Cathedral Almaty stood firm with only minor damage.
