Bengaluru Metro has received India’s first locally-made driverless train, manufactured by Titagarh Rail Systems in West Bengal. The Bengaluru metro driverless train will run on the Yellow Line, which is set to open between March and early April.
The new train, built with stainless steel, has modern automatic controls and advanced features. It will run on the Yellow Line, an 18-km route connecting Electronic City to other parts of Bengaluru. This achievement marks an important step forward for India’s metro rail industry.
Housing Minister Manohar Lal praised India’s growing metro system, saying it’s now the world’s third largest and could become bigger than America’s metro rail network within five years.
The new driverless train will arrive in Bengaluru by January 20th. It will then go through two weeks of signal testing. The manufacturer, Titagarh Rail Systems, plans to deliver two more trains by April, just in time for the Yellow Line’s opening.
The company will deliver one train each month at first, then speed up to two trains monthly. They’re building 34 trains as part of a Rs. 1,578-crore deal. Fifteen trains will run on the Yellow Line, while the rest will serve Bengaluru’s Purple and Green lines.
