Air India launches Wi-Fi service on flights—– becomes the first airline to offer WiFi on both local and foreign flights. After testing it successfully on flights to New York and London, they’re rolling it out on their newest planes.  The new Air India Wi-Fi service will be on certain planes (A350, Boeing 787-9, and select A321 neo) when flying above 10,000 feet. However, the connection depends on various factors like satellite coverage and government rules.

The Airline company said that Air India will offer free Wi-Fi at first for certain planes and then slowly add it to more planes. With Air India in-flight Wi-Fi, passengers can go online, check social media, work, and send messages to loved ones.

Steps To Connect To Free Wi-Fi On Your Air India Flight

Getting online during your Air India flight is easy:
  1. Turn on your device’s Wi-Fi and open settings.
  2. Look for and click on “Air India Wi-Fi”.
  3. When your browser opens the Air India page, type in your flight booking number (PNR) and last name.

Soon after that, you’ll enjoy free internet access during your flight.

Why Didn’t Indian Planes Have Internet Earlier?

Indian planes didn’t have Wi-Fi earlier because of two main reasons:

First, the technology was expensive. Airlines needed special equipment on planes to catch internet signals from either ground towers or satellites. This meant spending a lot of money to upgrade their planes.

Second, airlines weren’t sure if it was worth the cost. They worried whether travellers would pay extra for internet service, making it difficult to recover their investment.

Plus, connecting to the internet at 35,000 feet isn’t simple—– planes either need to connect to towers on the ground (which doesn’t work over oceans) or to satellites in space (which can be slow but works everywhere).

Vistara led the way to becoming India’s first airline to offer Wi-Fi, but only on its international flights using Boeing 787-9 planes.

Now in 2025, Air India has made a bigger move by bringing Air India Wi-Fi launch to domestic flights; the 1st Indian Airline to do so. You can get online if you’re flying on their Airbus A350, Boeing 787-9, or some of their Airbus A321neo planes. As a welcome offer, Air India is letting passengers use this Wi-Fi service for free during the initial period.
