Following the demise of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has made two major announcements:
- The ongoing Kankaria Carnival has been cancelled effective Friday. The festival, which began on December 25 and was scheduled to run until December 31, will not continue.
- New dates will be announced for the upcoming Ahmedabad Flower Show, which is planned to take place at the Sabarmati Riverfront.
The week-long Kankaria Carnival’s popularity is evident with the attendance of over 2 million visitors. In just the last two days, more than 200,000 people had attended the event.
For those affected by the cancellation, a special committee will handle all matters related to refunds and compensation.
“The decision for it (compensations) will be taken by the special committee, to be constituted by the Commissioner. Since the event was cancelled under special circumstances, tender conditions and terms need to be evaluated and analysed”, said Deputy Municipal Commissioner Jayeshkumar B Upadhyay.
Also, the special traffic rules around Kankaria Lake will soon be removed. Officials say they will announce the new flower show dates soon.
