History of Chandrakoop Varanasi

The name ‘Chandrakoop’ comes from two words: ‘Chandra,’ meaning moon, and ‘Koop,’ meaning well. According to Hindu mythology, this well was created by Chandra, the moon god, who was also a devotee of Lord Shiva.

Chandra Koop Siddheshwari is believed to be older than the holy river Ganga. To please Lord Shiva, Lord Chandra created the Chandreshwar Ling, a revered Shiva lingam, and meditated there for a long time. During this period of meditation, he established Chandrakoop. Local Transport to Siddheshwari Temple:

• Head towards the Varanasi Cantt area, where the Siddheshwari Temple is located. Chandra koopeswar is situated within the temple grounds, which is near the famous Kashi Vishwanath Temple. Another notable temple nearby is the Sagas Bavji Temple, where the Shiva lingam is revered as “Sagas Bavji.”
• To reach the Siddheshwari Temple, begin at Gate No. 4 of the Kashi Vishwanath Temple. Proceed north until you arrive at Raja Katra Chowk. After crossing the chowk, turn right at the next intersection. Continue walking a bit further, and you’ll see the Siddheshwari Temple on your left.
