The best time to visit Chembra Peak is in winter between December and February. Everything is green and fresh after the rains during these months.
Skip the summer season as it is too hot and humid to have a fun trek and avoid rainy seasons as the path gets slippery and dangerous for a trek.
Tip: Start your trek early in the morning during winter. This way, you can enjoy the cool, dewy air as you climb to the top.

Before you can hike Chembra Peak, you need to get permission from the forest department. They only let 200 people hike each day, and it’s first-come, first-served. You can buy your ticket at the counter when you arrive. The ticket price includes a guide. While you don’t have to have a guide, it can make your hike more fun. Guides know lots of interesting stories about Chembra Peak and the area around it. So if you want to learn more while you hike, having a guide is a good idea.
From the watchtower, it is about 2 km to the heart-shaped pond. Locals call this pond “hridhayathadakam” in their language. The pond is situated in a pretty spot surrounded by green grass fields. From here, you can see amazing views of the whole valley spread out in front of you.
After spending time at the lake, make sure to head back to the entrance (where you bought your tickets) before evening – you’re not allowed to stay overnight on the peak. Many people say this trek is the best one you can do in all of Kerala.
The whole trail to Chembra Peak is about 4.5 km long. After walking 1 km from the ticket counter, you will find a watchtower. From there, it’s a 2 km uphill walk to reach the lake. While the peak is another 1.5 km beyond the lake, guides don’t let visitors go that far. So, you will actually end up walking about 3 to 3.5 km in total.
The hike is a bit challenging, but not too hard. First, you walk through tea gardens and forests. This part can be a bit tough. Then, you come out into open areas. This second part is easier to walk through. Overall, most people who are in good to ok shape can do this hike if they take their time.
