During the war against America, South Vietnamese soldiers used them as hideouts to protect themselves from the attack. These tunnels even helped the Viet Cong soldiers to launch surprise attacks on their enemies.

The Cu Chi Tunnels entrance fee is approximately 90,000 - 110,000 VND per person. However, this ticket price does not include the guided tour or any other activities.

One surprising fact about these tunnels is that they existed before 1946, and were primarily used during the French Indochina War. However, the importance of Cu Chi Tunnels increased during the Vietnam War, and they expanded to over 250 kilometres.

Built with strategic planning that they were equipped with all the facilities, including weapon storage areas, hospitals, kitchens, and living spaces. Cu Chi Tunnels not only protected the Viet Cong but also became an asset for them.

It is amazing how local people using simple hand tools constructed these tunnels. These underground pathways connected villages, military bases, and key locations, allowing the Viet Cong to maintain control despite aerial bombings and enemy advances.

Cu Chi Tunnels featured multiple levels, with some reaching depths of up to 10 meters and 2 feet wide. This hiding place was strengthened with bamboo, wood, and clay to prevent any collapse. Cu Chi Tunnels played an important role and helped the Viet Cong during the war. As it was used by the Viet Cong to conduct guerrilla warfare, facilitating surprise attacks and quick retreats. Designed with multiple layers which have many hidden trap doors and booby traps to fool the enemies.

The tunnels not only provided physical security to the Vietnamese people but also played a significant role psychologically. It created fear among the enemy troops that the Viet Cong could attack them from anywhere, as they were not able to find the hiding place.

How To Reach Cu Chi Tunnels

The tunnels are located about 60 kilometres (37 miles) northwest of Ho Chi Minh City. So if you are wondering how do I get to the Cu Chi Tunnels from Ho Chi Minh City, then here are the options from which you can choose:

  • By Public Bus: Take Bus No 13 to Cu Chi Bus Station and take Bus No 79, which will drop you near the tunnels. It will take approximately 2-3 hours to reach your destination.
  • By Private Shuttle: Take direct shuttles from Ho Chi Minh City to the Cu Chi Tunnels, which will take around 1.30 hours to 2 hours to reach here.
  • By Private Car or Taxi: You can hire a private taxi or cab from anywhere and reach the tunnels within 1-2 hours.
  • By Motorbike: If you are a thrill seeker and travelling alone, then you can reach here via motorbike within around 2 hours using Highway 22.
