Things Eight Years of Vietnam Adventure Travel Taught Us to Never Skip

1. Book the Ha Long Bay kayak slot before the cruise, not after: The best lagoons crowd by 11 AM. An early slot means fewer boats, better light, and more room to paddle.
2. Carry cash in Vietnamese dong from day one: Vietnam tourism runs heavily on cash at local markets, street food stalls, and cave entries. ATMs outside major cities are not always reliable.
3. The Cu Chi Tunnels are narrow and low: If you are even slightly claustrophobic, know that before you go in. The experience is worth it, but it helps to be prepared.
4. Wear closed shoes on the Marble Mountains: It is easy to ignore until you are halfway up a wet stone staircase in sandals. The caves and pagodas are worth it. The slip is not.
5. Keep one unplanned evening in Hoi An: The ancient town opens up differently after dark, with lantern-lit streets, the Hoai River, and food stalls that don't show up on any map. Leave the schedule behind for a few hours.
