E-Passport launched in India under the Passport Seva Programme V2.0. Now, everyone applying for a new passport or renewing their old one, whether in India or at Indian missions overseas, will get a chip-enabled booklet.
This upgrade means better digital security and quicker processing at immigration counters. The good news? If you already have a regular passport, you don't need to worry, it's still valid and works just fine for now.
The e-passports (also called electronic passports) look just like your regular passport booklets, but with one key difference: it has a tiny chip hidden inside. You can spot it by the small gold symbol on the cover! These electronic passports are part of India’s push towards safer, faster digital travel documentation.
This e-passports India chip stores all your important details: your photo, name, date of birth, and fingerprints. Think of it like a secure digital ID card built right into your passport.
The chip uses something called RFID technology, which lets immigration officers scan your passport quickly without typing everything manually.
This also covers the security features and RFID chips in e passport, which ensure authenticity and protect your identity from tampering.
The biggest advantage of the e-passports India is speed. At airports, immigration officers can scan your chip in seconds instead of manually checking everything. Also, the E-passports are accepted worldwide. The chip is highly secure, making the passport difficult to duplicate or tamper with, which helps protect your identity while traveling.
Getting your new electronic passport is straightforward. The government has launched the Passport Seva Programme 2.0, which makes the whole application process much easier than before.
You don't need to fill out any special forms or request the chip-enabled version. It’s automatic. Every new passport issued now comes as a digital passport by default.
The updated Passport Seva website and mobile app simplify the application:
Your existing passport remains valid until its expiry date. Apply for the new e-passport only when your current one expires, gets damaged, runs out of pages, or needs renewal, after which you’ll automatically receive the chip-enabled version.
