3. Shivrinarayan Temple

Shivrinarayan Temple and the whole town of Shivrinarayan is one of the famous places to visit in Akaltara Chhattisgarh. It is a fascinating place filled with myths. This place is also famously known as Jagannath Puri of Chhattisgarh due to the presence of the Shivrinarayan temple.

According to mythology, Sankad Purana describes Shivrinarayan as a dense forest ruled by the Shivri dynasty. In a tragic tale Jara, a shivir, accidentally becomes the cause of the death of Lord Krishna. Guilt-filled Jara retrieved Krishna’s ashes, creating the idol of Neela Madhava, which eventually moved to Puri.

When Jara received the news of Murthy’s transfer, he was heartbroken. Neela Madhava now manifested as Narayani, promised to reside secretly in Shivarinarayana, thereby establishing it as a hidden pilgrimage site. The whole story behind this place makes it one of the popular destinations for tourist in Akaltara.

4. Vishnu Temple

When you explore tourist places in Akaltara, you’ll come across Vishnu Mandir. This ancient temple, started by the Hayhay Vansh kings in the 12th century, was supposed to be a grand temple. Unfortunately, the builders never quite managed to finish it. Instead of a completed temple, we now have two halves, which is now called Nakata Mandir.

Despite its unfinished state, the temple is still one of the unique places to visit in Akaltara. Its walls are carved with statues of gods, goddesses, and even mythical beings like Gandharvas and Kinners. 

5. Maa Chandrahasini Temple

Around 90 km from Janjgir-Champa Station, Maa Chandrahasini Temple is one of the most famous places to visit in Akaltara Chhattisgarh or near Akaltara. Located by the Mahanadi River, the Chandrahasini Devi Temple is a gem of Akaltara. This place becomes a bustling hub of festivities during Navratri every year. It’s for everyone! People from as far away as Orissa come here to join in the Navratri celebration. It is among the best attractions in Akaltara.
