Gadisar Lake History

blog-images

The story of Gadisar Lake history begins in the 12th–13th century when Rawal Jaisal, the founder of Jaisalmer, decided to build a man-made tank to store rainwater. Since the desert had very few natural water sources, this lake became the lifeline of the entire city. Later in 1367 AD, Maharawal Gadsi Singh rebuilt and expanded it, which is why the lake is now called Gadisar or Gadsisar Sagar Lake.

For many years, this freshwater lake supported daily life, farming, and travel in the harsh desert. Before pipelines and canals existed, people came here to collect water, worship at the temples, and rest during long journeys. Even today, the peaceful ghats and old shrines around the lake reflect its importance in shaping Jaisalmer’s past.

Because of its connection with kings, pilgrims, and travellers, Gadsisar Lake history is deeply rooted in the culture and survival of the Golden City.

Architecture of Gadisar Lake

The architecture around the lake is one of its biggest attractions. The most famous structure is Tilon-ki-Pol, a beautifully carved sandstone gateway built by a courtesan. A small temple was placed on top of the arch so that no one could order it to be demolished.

Around the lake, you’ll find old temples, shrines, and chhatris (umbrella-shaped cenotaphs) made from yellow sandstone, the same stone that gives Jaisalmer its golden glow. These structures appear even more magical during sunrise and sunset.

The calm water reflecting these carvings creates perfect photo spots and shows how skilled the craftsmen of Jaisalmer were. Whether you’re walking on the ghats or boating across the lake, the architecture adds charm and brings the stories of the past to life.

A Peaceful End to Your Golden Journey

Gadisar Lake is more than just a pretty waterbody in the desert, it is a blend of history, calm scenery, beautiful sunsets, and cultural charm. From its royal past and old temples to boating, birds, and nearby heritage spots, the lake shows you the true spirit of Jaisalmer. It’s a place where you can slow down, enjoy the view, and feel the magic of the Golden City all around you.
