One of the popular tourist attractions Gohar Mahal is the go-to spot in Bhopal for all kinds of cultural events, art exhibitions, and colorful fairs. People from all over India and even abroad come to check it out year-round.
Gohar Mahal in Madhya Pradesh is one of the state’s architectural wonders featuring Mughal and Hindu styles. The name Gohar Mahal comes from its creator, Qudisiya Begum, who was a huge fan of art and architecture. The palace, inside and out, beautifully highlights her interests in art and architecture.
She was really interested in art and architecture and wanted to leave a landmark, so she built this palace in 1820 and as her nickname was Gohar Begun, she gave it the name—Gohar Mahal. It’s looked after by Madhya Pradesh Tourism and is a significant heritage site.
It’s a great spot to learn about Indian history, especially the story of Bhopal’s Nawab dynasty. Fun fact—This was where the queen spent her last days before handing over her reign to her daughter.
Inside the Mahal, you’ll find lots of doorways, hallways, and jharokhas (those cool windows). One big open hall offers a lovely view of the lake. The remnants of old murals and beautiful woodwork highlight the palace’s past. And, the view of the Upper Lake from the terrace? Simply stunning.
Sure, the palace has seen better days, but there’s a lot of work happening to fix it up. They even organize some auctions and exhibitions featuring handloom fabrics, ethnic arts, and other goodies, especially in September.

“I did my first solo trip in India with WanderOn. Initially I was sceptical about their Meghalaya-Kaziranga trip as I didn't have any prior experience with them but the team assured me that it's going to be one of the best experiences of my life.

“In Ladakh, find the perfect blend of culture, adventure, and serenity. December last year I decided that my next trip would be Ladakh but didn’t know how to go about it. I knew I wanted to travel in a group, as I had prior experiences of traveling in a group but wanted an organiser I could trust. Ladakh isn’t like other destinations wherein you need some instructions due to the high altitudes.

The place was very beautiful and the quality of service was top-notch, the itinerary was very good and the quality of transportation and stays were very good. Had an awesome time there and made some good friends as well. Lastly, our trip captains Priyasha and Rachit managed the entire trip very well and were so fun and made our trip an experience worth remembering.
