Gulmarg originally had a Hindu name Gaurimarg. The literal meaning of Gauri Marg is ‘Path of Gauri.’ Gauri is the alternate name of Mata Parvati, wife of Shiv Bhagwan. As was the norm in those days, Gauri Marg was rechristened as Gulmarg by an Islamic chieftain Yousuf Shah Chakh in mediaeval India (15th or 16th century).
