Interesting Facts about Andaman and Nicobar islands

• The islands are home to several indigenous tribes, including the Sentinalese, Jarawas, and Great Andamanese, among others. These tribes have lived in isolation for thousands of years and have their own distinct languages, cultures, and traditions.

• The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are of volcanic origin and are actually the tops of a submerged mountain range. They are situated in the Bay of Bengal, closer to Myanmar and Indonesia than to mainland India.

• The islands are known for their rich biodiversity, both on land and in the surrounding waters. They are home to a wide variety of flora and fauna, including many endemic species found nowhere else on Earth. The marine life around the islands is particularly diverse, making it a popular destination for snorkelling and diving.

• The islands were severely affected by the Indian Ocean tsunami in 2004, which caused widespread destruction and loss of life. However, efforts have been made to rebuild and rehabilitate the affected areas since then.

Kala Pani: An Overview

Kala Pani, or Cellular Jail, was constructed by the British colonial administration in the late 19th century to exile political prisoners and dissidents from mainland India.

 The design of the Cellular Jail was such that each cell was isolated from the others, with small windows high on the walls, allowing minimal interaction between prisoners. This isolation was meant to break the spirit of the inmates.

Cellular Jail became a symbol of British oppression in India and played a significant role in the Indian independence movement. Many freedom fighters, including leaders of the Indian National Congress.

The jail was notorious for its cruel and sadistic warders who often subjected prisoners to brutal punishments and torture.

After India gained independence in 1947, Cellular Jail was declared a national monument and converted into a museum and memorial to honour the freedom fighters who were imprisoned here.
