When you think of a Ladakh trip, ice hockey might not be the first thing that pops into your mind. But surprise! This cold desert isn’t just about snow-capped mountains and peaceful monasteries; it’s also the ice hockey capital of India! Every winter, as the temperature drops and natural ice rinks form, Ladakhis gear up with sticks, skates, and helmets for some serious action on the ice.

It’s not just a sport here—it’s a winter tradition that brings the whole community together. Kids, locals, and even travelers jump in to cheer for teams battling it out in nail-biting matches. Whether you’re a sports fan or just looking for something unique, ice hockey in Ladakh is guaranteed to leave you amazed—and maybe a little cold!

History Of Ice Hockey in Ladakh

The history of Ice Hockey in Ladakh too is an interesting one. The concept of Ice Hockey in Ladakh started more than 50 years ago in Jangthang, that too by the Indian Army. Ice Hockey became their very own downtime game. Since it was a remote posting and there was a lack of facilities, the soldiers used to attach blades to their ammunition shoes which served as the perfect ice skates.

Field hockey sticks served the purpose of ice hockey sticks and the role of the puck was served by some sand filled in a shoe polish can. And from that day Ice hockey in Ladakh has become very popular and several ice hockey championships have been organized all around Ladakh throughout the years, making it one of the best things to do in Ladakh in the modern day.
