The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway has been closed for the fourth consecutive day due to multiple landslides caused by heavy rains in the Udhampur-Ramban area. Over 2,000 vehicles remain stranded along the 270-km stretch of the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, which is the only all-weather road connecting Kashmir to the rest of India.
The closure of the Jammu Srinagar Highway occurred on Tuesday when flash floods and heavy rainfall triggered landslides between Jakheni and Chenani in the Udhampur district. As a result, traffic has been halted, and no vehicles are allowed to travel from Nagrota in Jammu towards key locations like Reasi, Chenani, Patnitop, Doda, Ramban, Banihal, and Srinagar.
The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has been working tirelessly to clear the road, with restoration efforts underway. Authorities are hopeful that the Jammu Srinagar National Highway will reopen by Friday evening.
However, they have advised people to refrain from unnecessary travel and focus on essential services only. This closure marks the fourth time in recent weeks that the Jammu Srinagar Highway has faced significant disruptions.
In addition to the closure of the main highway, nine other inter-district roads in the Jammu region are also shut due to landslides and road damage. Several villages in Jammu, Samba, Kathua, and Udhampur districts have been cut off due to the flash floods.
For those seeking alternative routes, the Kishtwar-Sinthan-Anantnag highway is open for light motor vehicles, and traffic is currently operating on the Mughal Road as per the latest advisory. With the ongoing construction on the Jammu Srinagar road, the authorities are working to divert traffic as needed. They continue to monitor the situation closely to ensure safe passage for essential services.
While the Jammu Srinagar National Highway remains closed, the latest updates on road conditions and diversions are being shared to keep the public informed.
