About Penang Kek Lok Si Temple

It features the impressive seven-story Ten Thousand Buddhas Pagoda, commissioned by the late Thai king Rama VI. It showcases 10,000 alabaster and bronze Buddha statues along with a towering 36.57-meter (120 ft) bronze statue of Guanyin (Kuan Yin), the Goddess of Mercy. 

The temple harmoniously integrates Mahāyāna Buddhism, Theravāda Buddhism, and traditional Chinese rituals, reflecting its name, Kek Lok Si, which translates to “Sukhāvatī Temple” or “Temple of Supreme Joy,” denoting a paradise or pure land.

History of Kek Lok Si Temple

Sponsored by five prominent Chinese business figures from Penang, known as Hakka tycoons, the temple’s initial structures were funded through donations and the dedication of various artifacts. 

The main hall, housing a shrine to Guanyin and other goddesses, symbolically represents the island of Potalaka, while the temple’s various shrine chambers feature gilded statues of Buddhas and bodhisattvas. 

In recognition of the temple’s glory, the Guangxu Emperor of China honored Beow Lean with sacred texts and elevated him as the “Chief Priest of Penang.” The completion of the seven-story “Ban Po Thar” pagoda in 1930, blending Chinese, Thai, and Burmese architectural styles, further showcased the temple’s syncretic nature. 

In 2002, a 30.2-meter bronze statue of Guanyin was inaugurated, accompanied by a three-tiered pavilion completed in 2009. Despite a devastating fire in 2021, the temple complex, renowned for its extensive wood and stone carvings, remains a vital religious and cultural site.
