Legends Associated With Kyllang Rock

blog-images
As you all know the forest and lush rolling hills and valleys of Meghalaya have many legends hidden underneath them. Like the story of Ka Likai a tribal lady after whom the famous Nohkalikai Waterfalls of Meghalaya are named, the story of Mawphlang Sacred Grove, and much more. Well, the famous Kyllang Rock of Meghalaya also has a few local legends as follows:

1. The Family Rock

According to this legend, the Kyllang Rock is a family rock made of a father, mother and child. This is the story of a family who was returning from Jantia Hills to Mawdoh. However, on their way, a stone pierced through the feet of the mother and got stuck. The mother was carrying her child and thus it was difficult for her to walk with the stone stuck in her foot.

Looking at the miserable condition of the wife, the husband decided to carry his wife and their child. As they began walking, the stone gradually grew bigger. When they stopped to have some rest, the growing stone got so large that it engulfed the entire family.

2. The Battle Of 2 Rocks

According to another Khasi folklore, Kyllang Rock is believed to be a result of a battle between two gods – Kyllang and Symper, who are believed to be brothers in some folklore. Kyllang was a mischievous god who often challenged people and showed off his power by throwing stones. Sometimes he got very destructive and violent due to his unpredictable mood swings.

Symper another giant rock god was in Weiloi approx 50 km south of the present location of Kyllang Rock. He was more calm and peaceful. Symper protested against the violent behavior and destructive nature of Kyllang. Kyllang did not like the interference of Symper and thus he challenged him for a battle.

Thus a battle took place between these two gigantic rocks. Symper won the battle as he was blessed with the power of boulders, but Kyllang only had sand as a superpower. It is said that after the battle, the Kyllang went to Khadsawpha in the West Khasi Hills while Symper stayed at the same place in the East Khasi Hills.
