We all know that living root bridges, waterfalls, and rolling hills are the stars of Meghalaya but you know where you’ll find the utmost peace? In the villages of Meghalaya! And one such gem is Mawphanlur village—a spot that’ll truly complete your trip to Meghalaya!

Mawphanlur is like a hidden treasure in the West Khasi Hills. It’s a small village that feels like a peaceful dream—green hills, seven calm lakes, and charming little cottages all around. The weather is cool because it’s high up at 1,840 meters, and the place is so quiet you can hear birds singing and maybe even a cow’s bell in the distance. You can go kayaking on the lakes or climb the big rocks just for fun. If you love nature or photography, this place is an absolute treat!

So if Meghalaya is calling, make sure Mawphanlur is on your list! Pack your bags, grab your camera, and get ready to chill by the lakes, chase sunsets, and sleep under a sky full of stars. Mawphanlur is waiting—and it’s totally worth it!

History and Culture of Mawphanlur

blog-images

The peaceful charm of Mawphanlur wasn’t always a known secret. Back in 1973, visionaries Drenly K. Bani and Rina Lyngdoh Lyngkhoi came up with the idea of creating lakes in the area and they didn’t just dream it, they made it happen! Thanks to their efforts, Mawphanlur slowly transformed into the scenic getaway we know today.

The village is mainly home to the Khasi tribe, known for their unique matrilineal society—where family names and inheritance are passed down through women. This beautiful tradition influences everything from daily routines to larger community customs. The Khasis share a deep bond with nature and live in harmony with it, practicing sustainability long before it became a buzzword. It’s this rich blend of tradition, community spirit, and love for the land that gives Mawphanlur its soul.

Best Time to Visit Mawphanlur

blog-images

The best time to visit Mawphanlur village is from October to April when the weather of Mawphanlur is cool, the skies are clear, and the views are absolutely magical. It’s the perfect season to enjoy everything—from peaceful treks and kayaking in the calm lakes to lying on the grass and watching the stars. You’ll love how quiet and refreshing it feels out there.

Avoid the monsoon (June to Sept) unless you enjoy muddy trails and surprise leeches. And yep, pack something warm because nights can get pretty chilly!

How to Reach Mawphanlur

blog-images

Alright, road trip lovers and mountain explorers—if you're heading to the peaceful paradise called Mawphanlur, let’s make sure you reach there without any GPS-induced breakdowns.

1. From Shillong

Hop onto the Shillong Nongstoin Tura Highway. This one’s a smooth ride and a beauty too. Once you reach Markasa, take a right towards Mawphanlur. But hold up! This next stretch is a narrow twisty uphill ride. Definitely not your regular city street. If you're not comfy with hill driving, maybe let the pros take the wheel.

2. Public Transport Option

Feeling adventurous? Catch a shared jeep or public bus heading to Tura or Nongstoin and hop off at Markasa. From there, you’ll need to grab a tiny warrior of a car (we’re talking Maruti 800s or Altos) or a local jeep to get you up to Mawphanlur.

3. From Markasa

Once you reach Markasa, it’s time to switch things up a bit. You’ll need to park your regular vehicle there and hop into a four-wheel drive or a jeep to get to Mawphanlur.

Why? Because the road ahead may be paved, but it’s narrow, steep, and full of twists—not exactly friendly for every car. If you're not used to driving in the hills, it's best to let someone experienced take the wheel.

4. Coming from Elsewhere?

  • From Guwahati: About 170 km, roughly 4–5 hours of scenic drive.
  • From Cherrapunji: Just 20 km, and takes about an hour (yep, pretty close!).

In Ladakh, find the perfect blend of culture, adventure, and serenity. December last year I decided that my next trip would be Ladakh but didn’t know how to go about it. I knew I wanted to travel in a group, as I had prior experiences of traveling in a group but wanted an organiser I could trust. Ladakh isn’t like other destinations wherein you need some instructions due to the high altitudes.
