Chunar Fort, initially established by Maharaja Vikramaditya of Ujjain for his brother Raja Bhartihari, has a rich history of rulers and conquests. King Sahadeo renamed it Nainagarh in 1029 AD. Prithviraj Chauhan fortified it in 1177 AD, followed by Babar’s rule in 1525 AD and Sher Shah Suri’s in 1532 CE. Akbar recaptured it in 1575 AD, later passing to the nawabs of Awadh in the 18th century. Finally, the British seized it in 1772 AD, utilizing it as a weapons warehouse until India gained independence.
The fort is located at the border of River Ganga on two sides and is famous for its natural beauty and historical events. Spread across 34,000 sq. ft, the fort is a solid structure that stands on a rock, which was part of the Vindhya Range.
