It is believed that the human-a-like rock was once a brave soldier who was cursed by the sage and turned into this rock. Local villagers of this area report unusual occurrences near the rock at night, including flickering lights and eerie whispers carried by the wind.

Another famous story about Phantom Rock, Kerala is used by many monks for meditation and to perform secret rituals. It is said that during certain times of the year, mysterious sounds can be heard, believed to be the chants of these long-lost sages. One of the other famous stories is about the rock that has the soul of a demon which was defeated by the warrior. Many years ago, it was believed that there was a terror of a demon who used to kill local villagers. The king of the area took charge and asked his royal sage to create a sword which could defeat the Demon. With great knowledge, the sage created the sword which is capable of killing the demon which terrified him and he turned into this rock.

If you are seeking a way how to reach Phantom Rock, then once you reach Wayanad, it is very easy to travel here. However, you need to cover the distance by trekking but you can easily reach the starting point of the trek via various ways.

  • By Air: The nearest airport is Calicut International Airport, approximately 90 km away. From the airport, you can hire a taxi or take a bus to Wayanad.
  • By Train: The nearest railway station is Kozhikode, located around 75 km from Wayanad. From here, you can take a cab or bus to reach Phantom Rock.
  • By Road: Wayanad is well-connected by road. The major cities near Phantom Rock like Kalpetta which is 18.8 km or Sulthan Bathery, from which it is 13 km away.

Best Time to Visit Phantom Rock

The best time to visit Phantom Rock is during the morning when the sun is about to expand its rays in the sky. During this time of the day, the view from here looks exceptionally beautiful as the warm light of the sun and an ariel view of the area will create magical views for you.

The best time to visit Phantom Rock is during the cooler months which start from the month of October and end in the month of February. During this time, the weather is pleasant, making it ideal for trekking and sightseeing. Here is the breakdown of the weather based on the seasons:

  • Summer (March to May): Temperatures can be high, making trekking slightly challenging.
  • Monsoon (June to September): The area receives heavy rainfall, making the paths slippery and difficult to navigate.
