15 Amazing Places to Visit in Kodaikanal: An In-Depth Guide!

Let’s talk about one of South India’s most magical hill towns – Kodaikanal! As we wind our way up through the misty Palani Hills of Tamil Nadu, we’ll find ourselves in this little paradise that’s blessed with the perfect weather all year round.

Do you know what makes Kodai (that’s what we locals call it!) extra special? While other hill stations can get a bit too touristy, this place still keeps its old-world charm. Back in the 1840s, American missionaries fell so in love with these hills that they made it their home – and we can totally see why!

When we’re looking for Places to Visit in Kodaikanal, we’re in for a treat. The name Kodaikanal means “Gift of the Forest” in Tamil, and we couldn’t agree more. Every morning, we get to wake up to misty views, the fresh scent of pine trees, and the kind of peace that’s hard to find these days. Right in the heart of town, there’s this beautiful star-shaped lake that becomes everyone’s favorite hangout spot.

Whether we’re wrapped in warm sweaters sipping coffee at a cozy café, or just wandering through the pine-scented streets, Kodai has this wonderful way of making us slow down and enjoy the moment. It’s not trying to be the next big thing – it’s just perfectly content being our beloved “Princess of Hill Stations.”

1. Kodaikanal Lake

A visit to Kodaikanal isn’t complete without spending some time at Kodaikanal Lake. This star-shaped, man-made lake is a calm oasis in the heart of the town. The lake, created in 1863 by Sir Vere Henry Levinge, a former British collector of Madurai, has since become one of the most iconic landmarks of Kodaikanal. Surrounded by eucalyptus trees, Kodaikanal Lake spans approximately 60 acres, providing a scenic setting for boating, cycling, and walking.

The lake offers various boating options, from rowboats to paddle boats. Families and friends can bond over a relaxed paddle across the lake or enjoy the unique experience of a shikara ride—similar to those in Kashmir. For cycling enthusiasts, the 5-kilometer path around the lake offers a pleasant route with plenty of photo spots, especially in the early morning or late afternoon when the mist often rolls across the water, creating an almost surreal view.

Nearby, you’ll find vendors selling hot tea, roasted corn, and local handicrafts, adding to the lively ambiance. Kodaikanal Lake is not just one of the places to visit in Kodaikanal but a destination that captures the spirit of the hill station.

  • Pro tip: visit in the evening for an unforgettable sunset.
