Everyone visits the main dzong in town, but far fewer make it to Simtokha, about 5km south of the city. Their loss! Our taxi driver told us this dzong was strategically built to protect the valley from demons. Whether you believe in demons or not, the commanding position definitely would've helped spot more earthly invaders, too!

If you visit in spring (like we did), you'll hit the jackpot – the rhododendron display is Insane. The park has over 40 species, and when they're blooming, it's like walking through a fantasy world. Even outside of rhododendron season, the native orchids and medicinal plant collections are fascinating.
We spent a whole morning hiking the trails and barely saw another person. The Bhutanese seem to have mastered the art of creating beautiful public spaces that somehow don't get overrun with tourists. One of the best places to see in Thimphu is if you need some nature time.
