Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park History

Rao Jodha Desert Park is named after Rao Jodha, a 15th-century Marwar ruler. The park was opened in 2006 to protect the Thar Desert’s environment. The aim was to bring back the area’s original plants.

Many birds, reptiles, and amphibians also live in the park. Some special animals you can find here are the Indian Desert Cat, Blackbuck, Nilgai, and Great Indian Bustard.

Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park is a beautiful park near the Mehrangarh Fort. It covers 250 acres of rocky land with sandstone shapes, canyons, and small valleys. 

It was built to fit in with the natural surroundings. The paths and places to sit are made from sandstone rocks. The park has some traditional buildings including a Jain temple, a stepwell, and a pavilion. 

The main attraction is the Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park Museum. It is great for learning about the Thar Desert’s history and culture. The museum has many interesting things to see, like old and new art, pottery and more!

Things To Do At Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park In Jodhpur

  • Walk around and look at the interesting rock shapes and enjoy the sunset. 
  • Go on a tour with a guide. They will tell you about how the rocks formed and what is special about the park.
  • Check out the museum to learn about the park’s story.
  • Find a nice spot for a picnic and enjoy the peaceful area.
  • Don’t forget to bring water. Also, bring a hat and sunscreen to protect yourself from the sun.

 If you want the best experience, come between November and February. This is winter in Jodhpur, and it is a pleasant time to explore the park.

The Rao Jodha Desert Park is situated at a great spot near Mehrangarh Fort, which is a famous place in Jodhpur. Close to other popular attractions, the park is only 5 kilometres from Jodhpur Railway Station. If you’re flying, then it is 8 kilometres from Jodhpur Airport.

Timings Of Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park

Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park is open every day of the week. However, the timings differ based on the month you are visiting. 
  • From April to September – 7:00 a.m. – 6:30 p.m.
  • From October to March – 8:00 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.

This building is made of white marble. Maharaja Sardar Singh built it in the 19th century to honour his father. It has a great architecture that looks a bit like a temple. 

  • Mehrangarh Fort

Mehrangarh Fort is a big fort on top of a hill at 410 feet in Jodhpur, Rajasthan. Rao Jodha built it in 1459.  The fort has thick walls that have seen many battles. Inside the fort, there are several palaces with beautiful carvings and large open spaces called courtyards.

  • Toorji Ka Jhalra 

Toorji Ka Jhalra, or Toorji’s Step Well, is an ancient stepwell in Jodhpur, Rajasthan. It was built by the wife of Maharaja Abhay Singh in the 1740s. It is admired for its beautiful, detailed carvings and decorations. 

  • Umaid Bhawan Palace

Umaid Bhawan Palace is an impressive historical landmark in Jodhpur on top of Chittar Hill. The palace was finished in 1943 and named after a past ruler, Maharaja Umaid Singh. 

This large palace is made of yellow sandstone. It has a beautiful combination of Eastern and Western architectural styles.

  • Ghanta Ghar 

Ghanta Ghar, also called the Clock Tower of Rajasthan, is an important landmark in Jodhpur. It is located next to the busy Sardar Market, which is named after Maharaja Sardar Singh. This historical tower offers great views of the whole city.
