Shaukat Mahal in Bhopal is a historic monument located just behind the famous Gohar Mahal. Tourists from different cities, even foreigners come to witness this heritage of Bhopal. It’s because Shaukat Mahal history and its constructions have a link to the city. 

Shaukat Mahal was built in the 1830s by Nawab Qudsiya Begum (She built Gohar Mahal)as a wedding gift for her daughter Sikander Jehan Begum. Shaukat Mahal is part of a royal complex around the Iqbal Maidan, formerly known as Khirniwala Maidan. Now, if you’re thinking it looks a bit different from other buildings in Bhopal, you’re right! Shaukat Mahal history and its design and architecture are what make it stand out from other monuments.

Bourbon Connection: The design is attributed to the Bourbon family of Bhopal, who are believed to be successors of French kings.

Royal Gift: Shaukat Mahal was constructed as a wedding gift for Sikander Jehan Begum, the first female ruler of Bhopal, highlighting its importance in royal history.

Architectural Blend: The building’s design uniquely combines Post Renaissance and Gothic styles with Indian-Islamic influences, making it an architectural marvel in Bhopal.

Unique Roof Design: The building’s roof features triangular arches, which is a rare architectural element in Indian structures.

Local Buses: Local buses are the best option to reach Shaukat Mahal. Bhopal has a well-connected local bus network. You can take a bus to the nearest stop to Shaukat Mahal and then use an auto-rickshaw or walk if the distance is short.
