This Mandir which has been serving as a central place of worship and devotion for more than a century represents the history of early Gorkha settlement in this beautiful hilly town of Kohima, the capital of Nagaland.
‘Chandmari’ which means “Firing Range” was those days a thinly populated area whose residents were mostly Gorkhas. It was covered with dense forests where wild tigers were in abundance, more so at the very site where the Mandir is presently situated.
The presence of many tigers especially tigresses was a constant threat to the populace of Chandmari. To stop this threat this temple was constructed and as a result, tigers stopped coming to Gorkhas.
The ‘Sheela’ inside the sanctum sanctorum is believed to be of the 64th Yogini and Singha Vahini Durga Bhawani. It is believed by all that whosoever comes to the Mandir with humility, faith, and devotion is richly blessed.
The very existence of this Mandir reflects the dedication, devotion, and sacrifice of our ancestors, because of whom today, we can come together with a feeling of love and oneness.
