Thrissur Pooram, Kerala's grandest temple celebration, falls every year in April as per the Malayalam calendar, and in 2026, it returns to Thekkinkadu Maidan, Vadakkunnathan Temple on April 26. If you haven't witnessed it yet, this is the year to change that.

Over 100 decked-up elephants in full ceremonial gold, 250+ drummers, rival fireworks that go on for hours, and a million people together for 36 straight hours.

The Thrissur Pooram celebration is loud, chaotic, and completely unforgettable, and Thrissur, during Pooram season, is easily one of the best places to visit in Kerala.

Thrissur Pooram History

Blog image

Over 200 years ago, Kerala's biggest temple festival wasn't Thrissur Pooram; it was Arattupuzha Pooram, held about 16 kilometers from Vadakumnathan Temple. Temples from across the region would gather there annually.

One year, heavy rains delayed several temples from reaching Arattupuzha on time. When they finally arrived, the chief of Peruvanam Gramam refused them entry. Humiliated, the chiefs of Thrissur and Kuttanellur decided they'd had enough and resolved to create their own celebration.

It was Shakthan Thampuran, the Maharaja of Kochi, who seized this moment. He saw an opportunity to build something far greater. He brought together ten temples surrounding Vadakkunnathan Temple and organized what would become Thrissur Pooram, a mass festival designed to outshine everything that came before it.

The ten temples were divided into two groups: Western and Eastern. More than 200 years later, that structure hasn't changed.

What started as a response to humiliation became Kerala's most iconic cultural event. That's the Thrissur Pooram history in brief: not just a religious occasion, but a story of pride, ambition, and the refusal to be turned away.

Thrissur Pooram Festival: Ten Temples. Two Sides. One Epic Rivalry

Western Group

Eastern Group

The two groups compete across every element: the Kudamattom, the melam performances, and the fireworks. This friendly rivalry is what gives Thrissur Pooram its electric energy. Thiruvambady and Paramekkavu are the lead temples of their respective groups and receive the most fanfare.

Best Spots to Watch Thrissur Pooram Festival

Blog image
  1. Thekkinkadu Maidan perimeter: The eastern and western sides of Thekkinkadu Maidan give you front-row views of the rival elephant lineups facing off across the ground. This is the heart of the action.
  2. Rooftop restaurants on Swaraj Round: The ring road surrounding Vadakkunnathan Temple is lined with hotels and restaurants, and their rooftops are the most sought-after spots for the fireworks display. Several hotels on Swaraj Round offer rooftop packages on Pooram night. Book months in advance.
  3. Near the Gopuram of Vadakkunnathan Temple: The main gateway of Vadakkunnathan Temple is the best spot for procession arrivals and the Kudamattom ceremony. Arrive at least two hours before to secure a spot.
  4. Exhibition grounds at Thekkinkadu Maidan: When the main crowd around the maidan gets too intense, the parallel exhibition grounds offer breathing room, food, and culture without losing the festival atmosphere entirely.

How to Reach Thekkinkadu Maidan, Thrissur

By Air:

  • Most people fly into Cochin International Airport (COK), which sits about 55 km from Thrissur.
  • Cabs are easy to find outside arrivals. The drive to Thrissur city takes anywhere between 60 to 75 minutes depending on traffic.

By Train:

  • Thrissur Railway Station (TCR) has trains pulling in from most major cities: Thiruvananthapuram, Kozhikode, Chennai, Mumbai, and Delhi among them.
  • Once you're out of the station, Thekkinkadu Maidan is just 2–3 km away.
  • An auto-rickshaw gets you there in under 10 minutes on a normal day.

By Road:

  • Thrissur is on NH 544 (the Kochi–Coimbatore highway).
  • KSRTC buses run regularly from Kochi, Kozhikode, Palakkad, and Coimbatore.
  • Private cabs and app-based taxis work well too.
  • The Thrissur KSRTC bus stand is about 1 km from Thekkinkadu Maidan.

Getting to the Venue on Pooram Day:

  • This is where most first-timers get caught off guard. Roads around Swaraj Round and Thekkinkadu Maidan are heavily restricted on the day of the festival.
  • No private vehicles are allowed close to the venue.

Here's what actually works:

  • Get dropped off or park at one of the designated zones outside the restricted area

Walk the final kilometer; it's manageable, and the crowd energy makes it worth it.

  • Auto-rickshaws operate until the restriction perimeter; beyond that, it's on foot.

What to Wear and What to Carry

Blog image

What to wear:

  • Light cotton clothes. April in Thrissur is hot and humid.
  • Comfortable flat footwear is a must since you'll be on your feet for hours. Avoid open-toe sandals in the crowds.

What to carry:

  • Earplugs. The Ilanjithara Melam is genuinely overwhelming at close range
  • Water bottle and oral rehydration salts
  • Portable phone charger (powerbank)
  • Small backpack with a zip; pickpockets operate in dense crowds
  • Cash: many exhibition stalls don't accept cards
  • Light rain jacket or poncho just in case

Photography Tips:

  • Arrive early for the best maidan positions.
  • Golden hour (late afternoon) is ideal for the elephant lineup.
  • Never use flash near the elephants; it disturbs them and can be dangerous.
  • For the fireworks, find elevation on a rooftop or terrace.

Thrissur Pooram Kerala: Worth Every Bit of the Hype

Blog image

People talk about Thrissur Pooram like it's something else. And honestly? It is.

Elephants in ceremonial gold lined up across Thekkinkadu Maidan. The Ilanjithara Melam building to a sound so loud you feel it in your chest. Two rival groups going head to head in the Kudamattom, swapping ornamental umbrellas above the elephants in a blur of color and speed.

After dark, hours of fireworks above Vadakkunnathan Temple while a million people stand together watching. Every single thing you've heard about it: the scale, the energy, the spectacle, holds up in person. If anything, it's bigger.

Over 200 years of history. Ten temples. Two sides. One maidan. A rivalry that somehow brings an entire region together every April.

Whether you're coming for the culture, the elephants, the drums, or simply because you want to witness something you'll talk about for years, Thrissur Pooram Kerala is worth planning your entire holiday around.

April 26, 2026. Book early, plan ahead, and let a Kerala tour package handle the rest.
