Tiger Hill Ladakh, also known as the Point 5062 or Surging Sea Hill, is a mountain in the Drass-Kargil area of Ladakh, India. It is surrounded by the Tolloling Range and other ridges ranging between 5,000-6,500 meters.

The hill overlooks the National Highway 1D, which serves as a gateway to the Siachen Glacier and connects Leh to Srinagar.

You can either view the Tiger Hill from the distant valley or climb it, and if one has plans to climb it, then he or she will truly witness the best panoramic views.

Neither the memorial nor the hills have an entrance fee. Tourists have to show ID proof to enter the memorial and the soldiers can check the documents anytime during your visit to the hill and memorial. There is no charge for cameras or video cameras.

How to Reach Tiger Hill?

You must want to know about how to reach Tiger Hill? So in order to reach here you can either hire a taxi or a bus or go trekking.

You can find buses and taxis from Srinagar, Ladakh as well as nearby areas of Tiger Hill. You can also reach here via train and the nearest railway station to the hill is located in Jammu (395 km away).

Drass Valley is easily accessible via the Leh-Srinagar highway. Most travellers prefer to cross Zoji La, a pass on this route, before sunrise as sun can melt glaciers which could cause hindrance in the route.

Further, people tend to drive pass the valley to get a view of the ridges and the hill from the memorial. However, in summers, people prefer trekking up the hill.

The best time to visit Tiger Hill is between July to September, which is the summer season in Ladakh. During the season, the sky is clear which offers a great view of the mountain. Moreover, this time is ideal for both camping and trekking.

A visit to the Tiger Hill must be avoided in winters; between November to April. This is the coldest time in this region and there could be heavy snowfall. The climate can go as low as -60 degree celsius during peak winter nights.

1. Kargil War Memorial

Also known as the Dras War Memorial, built by the Indian Army in the town of Dras, as a tribute to the soldiers who sacrificed their lives during the Kargil War Memorial 1999 between India and Pakistan.

This memorial is located on the Srinagar-Leh National Highway 1D, about 5 km from the city centre across the Tiger Hill, Kargil.

2. Mulbekh Monastery

The Mulbekh Monastery Maitreya Buddha in Kargil, Ladakh is important in terms of historical and religious importance in the region.

The monastery is situated on top of a hill, which overlooks the ancient trade route between Ladakh and Kashmir, known as the Silk Route.

3. Suru Valley

Suru Valley is a picturesque region known for its lush greenery, flowing rivers, and majestic peaks. Located in the Kargil district, it is drained by the Suru River, a tributary of the Indus River.

The valley is a hidden gem, offering a peaceful escape from the busy city life. Further, the valley is home to many species including horses, yaks, and other animals.

4. Draupadi Kund

According to Hindu mythology, it is a Mahabharata time kund where Goddess Draupadi took bath before heading to heaven.

The locals regard this lake to be magical and have curing properties. It is believed that anybody who has kidney stones or bone weakness or even skin problems and impotency, can drink the water from the kund to get relief.

5. Stongdey Monastery

Stongdey Monastery, or Stongde, Tonday or Thonde, is a flourishing Buddhist monastery in Zanskar, approximately 18 km northeast of Padum, on the road to Nimmu.

The monastery is located on a hillock overlooking the village of Stongdey. It is regarded as the second largest monastic institution in the Zanskar, hosting a community of 60 Gelukpa monks.

6. Heritage Hut Museum

Another place that you can surely visit is the Heritage Hut Museum, which shows the excellent work and sacrifices of the Indian Army.

Also known as ‘Hut of Remembrance’, the museum offers a chance to connect with the region’s military history and to pay homage to its heroes.

7. Munshi Aziz Bhat Museum

Located in the heart of Kargil, the museum offers a glimpse into the treasure trove of Central Asian and Ladakhi trade artefacts that once flowed through the region’s ancient trade routes.

It is a complete hidden gem, and is maintained by the family of Munshi Aziz Bhat, a local hero who helped in preserving the legacy of Kargil’s trade history.
