UPI Payments Start for Mauritius and Sri Lanka

India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) services have expanded to Sri Lanka and Mauritius, following a recent introduction in France. This extension aims to make digital transactions smoother for Indian citizens traveling to these countries.

It also benefits individuals from Mauritius when visiting India, offering them the convenience of using UPI for payments.

Amit Kumar, Chief Technology Officer of Easebuzz, highlighted that UPI has become a popular payment method in India, with over 300 million active users.

Now, not only Indians but also Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) can benefit from UPI for payments and money transfers, both within India and abroad. As more NRIs are expected to use UPI, India’s payment technology is set to become a major player globally.

NRIs can use UPI for seamless payments in India and other countries. Shikhar Aggarwal, Chairman of BLS E-Services, explained that NRIs can pay merchants in their country of residence when NPCI (National Payments Corporation of India) collaborates with the respective country’s payment network.

NPCI already has tie-ups with various countries, including Australia, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, USA, Qatar, Hong Kong, UK, Canada, Oman, and France.

NRIs can activate UPI by linking their international mobile numbers to their NRE/NRO accounts. This eliminates the need for an Indian mobile number and allows NRIs to use UPI with their international mobile number. NRIs can use UPI to pay Indian merchants without relying on expensive international cards and also transfer funds to their families in India.

For NRIs interested in using UPI from abroad, they should check with their banks and UPI service providers to understand available options, restrictions, and regulatory compliance requirements.

The process involves using UPI-enabled apps like Google Pay, PhonePe, or Paytm, registering NRE or NRO accounts, and adhering to foreign exchange regulations and currency conversion.
