The US Embassy in India has put out an important alert for anyone applying for a visa: if you've received a notice that your visa interview has been rescheduled, don't show up on your original appointment date.

In a firm US Embassy India visa advisory, officials made it clear that applicants who ignore their rescheduled appointments and arrive on the old date will not be allowed inside the consular offices. This means you won't get to attend your interview at all.

This strict policy is being enforced across all US consular offices in India. Embassy officials say the rule is necessary to manage the heavy flow of visa applicants and maintain order at their facilities.

Don't Miss Your New Date: Embassy Won't Let You In on Old Appointment

"If you have received an email advising that your visa appointment has been rescheduled, Mission India looks forward to assisting you on your new appointment date," the Embassy wrote. "Arriving on your previously scheduled appointment date will result in your being denied admittance to the Embassy or Consulate."

The visa appointment rescheduling India process is affecting thousands of applicants across different visa categories, from tourist visas to work permits.

Many applicants, especially those dealing with H-1B visa delays India, have found their interview dates moved around as the Embassy tries to manage its workload more efficiently. The rescheduling is happening at consular posts in major cities, including New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Kolkata.

Visa Wait Times: What to Expect Across Indian Cities

With all the visa appointment rescheduling India activity happening lately, wait times for US visa interviews have been changing dramatically from city to city. Here's what applicants are facing right now across major consular offices.

New Delhi Shows Major Improvement

The capital has seen some welcome news.

  • Student and exchange visas (F, M, and J categories) that used to require nearly two months of waiting are now available in about half a month.
  • Even better, tourist and business visa (B-1/B-2) wait times have been slashed from 6.5 months down to approximately 3.5 months.

Chennai's Numbers Are All Over the Place

Things are less predictable in Chennai.

  • B-1/B-2 appointments that once had a five-month wait are now showing as "N/A" on the system.
  • Meanwhile, other visa categories requiring interviews have improved from five months to around three months.

Mumbai Still Has the Longest Delays

If you're applying in Mumbai, prepare for a long wait.

  • Both tourist and business visa appointments are running at 9.5 months.
  • The only bright spot is for students and exchange visitors, who can expect to wait about three months.

Hyderabad Offers Moderate Wait Times

  • Hyderabad applicants looking at B-1/B-2 visas face roughly five months of waiting.
  • Student visas are moving faster at 2.5 months.
  • While work-related visas (H, L, O, P, Q categories) are being scheduled within two months.

Kolkata Falls in the Middle - H3

In Kolkata, tourist and business visa interviews are available in 4.5 to five months, depending on the specific slot.

How to Check Rescheduled US Visa Slots India

If you've received a rescheduling notice, log in to your account on the US visa appointment system https://www.ustraveldocs.com/ to see your new date.

The US visa appointment changes for Indian applicants are being updated regularly, so it's important to check your email and online portal frequently to stay informed about any shifts in your interview schedule.

Keep in mind that when the State Department lists wait times, they calculate months as 30-day periods and half months as 15-day periods.

These timeframes include weekends and embassy holidays, so the actual calendar date may be different from what you expect.

Since new slots can open up unexpectedly, make it a habit to check the scheduling portal often; you might find an earlier appointment becomes available.

New Security Checks Behind Wave of Rescheduled Appointments

The US Embassy warning old visa dates denied entry comes at a crucial time when major changes to visa rules are creating widespread disruptions.

Starting December 15, the US government is rolling out a new mandatory requirement for H-1B work visa applicants and their H-4 family members. Everyone applying must now make their social media profiles public so immigration officers can review their online presence before approving visas.

The US State Department has been clear about why these changes are happening. Officials emphasize that getting a visa "is a privilege and not a right," and that "every visa adjudication is a national security decision." They say the US "must be vigilant" to ensure applicants don't pose any security risks.

Why So Many Appointments Are Being Moved? -

This enhanced screening process takes extra time, which is why the US visa appointment changes for Indian applicants have been so extensive. Many H-1B and H-4 interviews originally scheduled for mid to late December have been cancelled and pushed back; in some cases, all the way to March 2026.

To accommodate the longer vetting process, US consular offices across India have also cut back on the number of visa interviews they conduct each day. This reduction has created a domino effect, forcing thousands of applicants to reschedule and disrupting travel and relocation plans for families and workers alike.

In Ladakh, find the perfect blend of culture, adventure, and serenity. December last year I decided that my next trip would be Ladakh but didn’t know how to go about it. I knew I wanted to travel in a group, as I had prior experiences of traveling in a group but wanted an organiser I could trust. Ladakh isn’t like other destinations wherein you need some instructions due to the high altitudes.
