Winter Storm In Southern US: Flight Cancellations And Power Outages

A severe winter storm in southern US created havoc across the region. Ice-covered roads and snowfall forced flight cancellations, leaving thousands of travellers stuck at airports and highways. States called in the National Guard for emergency assistance as freezing rain created dangerous conditions.

Southern US Winter Storm Updates

  • Heavy winter weather continues to disrupt the southern United States, with flight cancellations and icy road conditions on Saturday. Atlanta and Charlotte faced significant disruptions, with about 1,000 flights cancelled or delayed at Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport according to FlightAware software.
  • Almost a week after a snowstorm on Monday there are Southern US power outages that messed up the water system in Richmond. The city lifted its boil-water advisory late Saturday morning. The mayor announced that tests showed the water is now clean and safe, and people in Richmond and nearby areas can drink it normally without boiling it first.
  • While the major US winter storm moves toward the Atlantic, officials warn drivers about dangerous road conditions, especially after dark when melting snow could turn to ice.
  • Nashville residents are working hard to recover from the heavy snowfall. Local businesses and churches, including Judah Temple of Praise, began clearing several inches of snow on Saturday. Church members used shovels, salt, and snow blowers to clear their parking lots and sidewalks, making sure they could safely open for Sunday services.
  • Northern Alabama schools might stay closed on Monday if side roads remain icy. The storm brought record-breaking snow to several cities. Little Rock, Arkansas saw nearly 10 inches of snow, and Memphis, Tennessee received over 7 inches at its airport. Central Oklahoma and northern Texas, with some areas, are getting up to 7 inches of snowfall.
  •  The winter weather forced the Atlanta Hawks to postpone their basketball game against the Houston Rockets.

A National Weather Service meteorologist in Atlanta, Scott Carroll said “I definitely don’t think everything’s going to completely melt. Especially the secondary roads will probably still have some slush on them”.
