There was a Hindu Monk in the 8th century, who had revelations to build homes for people during his isolation. In this process, many of his followers died due to major accidents and illness. But, when it was completed, it came to be known as “Basuki”, which means the “dragon deity” believed to inhabit Mount Agung. And, then eventually it came to be known as the “Besakih temple”.

Things to Know about Besakih Temple

This is the largest temple in the complex, Pura Penataran Agung has different areas representing the 7 layers of the universe, and each of them has their own shrines. 

The Pura Pangubengan is located closest to Mount Agung’s peak and offers the best ever views with a 30-minute walk of the main Pura Penataran Agung. Here, the holy water is also sourced for the Karya Agung ceremonies at Pura Besakih temple and the local villages. 

Also, the 4 temples in the complex show the reflection of the 4 deities governing their respective compass points. So, there are Pura Batu Madeg in the north, Pura Kidulung Kreteg to the south, Pura Gelap in the east, and Pura Ulun Kulkul in the west. 

Also, there are many Hindu festivals celebrated here with so many devotees coming up! Then, about 20 minutes walk toward the northwest is a river known as Pura Peninjoan, offering the most serene views of all time. 

And, on the west is Pura Ulun Kulkul, which is really famous for the Balinese wooden slit gong, known as Kulkul on the island and it is a signaling device to convey special messages.

How to get to Besakih Temple

The famous Besakih temple is located in the North West of Bali, near Mount Agung. So, traveling from Kuta, Seminyak, Jimbaran, and Denpasar, you can take the Kusamba Bypass to Klungkung. 

Head north through Klungkung, which is toward Menanga to Besakih. Also, it would take around 2 hours from Kuta to reach here, depending on the travel conditions as well. But, there is no public transportation available to get to Besakih temple, so it would be convenient to hire a car with a driver.

While you visit the Besakih temple, then you will be subjected to an entrance fee of IDR 60,000 IDR per person for adults and IDR 30,000 IDR per person for kids. 

You can easily buy the ticket from the ticket counter in the parking which is just at the entrance gate of the temple. You need to pay here in Indonesian Rupiah, so please come with cash. 

Also, be respectful of the timings as well, and follow the dress code for the same. You need to come in a sarong while visiting the temple complex and you should not come with bare knees and shoulders.

At the Besakih temple, the complex is open 24 hours, but the time is restricted from 8 AM to 5 PM. So, the best time to visit the Besakih temple complex is during the early morning or later in the evening as it tends to be with lesser crowds at this time.
