About Black River Gorges National Park

It covers an area of 67.54 km2 including humid upland forest, drier lowland forest, and marshy heartland. Black River Gorges National Park is like a haven for Mauritius’ rainforest, which is shrinking. 

But it’s facing problems from plants and animals that don’t belong there, like Chinese guava and wild pigs. To protect the local plants and animals, the park is fencing off some areas and getting rid of these invaders. 

Even with these challenges, the park is home to many special species found only in Mauritius, such as the Mauritian flying fox and unique birds like the Mauritius kestrel and pink pigeon. 

It’s so important for birds that Bird Life International calls it an Important Bird Area. So, the park is working hard to keep Mauritius’ natural beauty safe for generations to come.

Facilities for visitors include two information centers, picnic areas, and 60 kilometers of trails. Four field stations in the park are used for National Parks and Conservation Service and Mauritian Wildlife Conservation research and conservation projects.
