Bollywood Travel Movies: Lights, Camera Explore

Believe it or not, Bollywood has impacted Indians and Indian culture more than we realise. From imitating Salman’s walk to getting Krish’s Mask to setting standards of love like King Khan, we have been there and done that.

However, some Bollywood travel movies have also awakened the inner travellers in us, inspiring us to pack our bags and take the journey into the unknown. Quiet relatable, right?

We may not understand how it works, but cinema has always had a great impact on our lives, which also gave birth to TV Tourism, where people see someplace in the movies or a TV series they watched, and some destinations made their way into their heart, so now they want to explore it all.

Now, if you feel this is absurd, think about it: how often have your friends and family told you that they saw a place in a movie and would love to go there one day? So you see, that is how these Hollywood and Bollywood travel movies impact us, and we may not have a clue about it.

1. Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge

Dil Wale Dulhania Le Jayege is an all-time favourite movie of Indians, which is evident from the fact that the Maratha Mandir theatres are still screening the movie even 28 years after its release in 1995.

The movie starts with a train journey in Switzerland, and you will see the stunning sights of Switzerland and London. The snow-capped peaks, where some of the scenes were shot, remain a major tourist attraction simply because of DDLJ. There was a significant increase in the number of people travelling from India to Switzerland, opening a revenue stream for the operator Rail Europe. As per reports, 40% of the revenue to the company comes from the Indians travelling to Europe.

By the end of it, the movie shows parts of Punjab, rekindling your wanderlust.

This romantic movie is the epitome of love. It revolves around a lot of train journeys, even at the end where Kajol runs to catch the train with SRK extending his hands towards her, making it an iconic scene in the history of Indian cinema.

2. Tamasha

Tamasha is another masterpiece of a movie, which is among the best Bollywood travel movies, that will awaken the inner child in you who just wants to follow their passion and travel the world.

The movie starts in Corsica, a beautiful island in France, where the lead characters are on their vacation. One thing leads to another, and we can see they eventually become close and explore the place together.

We can see some stunning visuals of Corsica, making you want to pack your bags and book your next flight to this magical island, featuring craggy mountains and a stunning sunset.

There are shots of Shimla, where Ranbir’s childhood has been seen. As the movie unfolds, we see that the ending is a happy one, and the lead character finally fixes his relationship with his father and begins following his dream. This movie had a huge impact on the youth, who gave up their passion because of family pressure.

As per the reports, after Tamasha hit the theatres, there was a good rise in the number of Indians travelling to Corsica, proving how these Bollywood travel movies impact us and our travel plans.

3. Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani

One of the best Bollywood travel movies that inspired a lot of people to take their trip to Manali is Ye Jawani Hai Deewani.

We can see three friends hopping on a train for a trip to Manali, with a surprised addition to the group, who was once a classmate embarking on this incredible journey full of adventures.

The way the movie has shown Manali is applaudable, and no wonder why everyone wanted to visit Manali for their next long weekend trip with their friends after the movie’s release.

It was not just a trip; it was a journey of finding oneself. We see that Naina, who was an introvert, transforms into a completely different person after the trip while also falling for a guy who wants to live like a nomad.

Some of the shots were taken in Paris, where we can see the lead character living his best life in Paris, and later, they reunite for a destination wedding in India.

After the movie, the concept of destination weddings also came into the picture, and now more and more people are going for it rather than having a regular big fat Indian wedding, so it can be said that Ye Jawani Hai Deewani is one of the Bollywood movies that inspired travel among individuals, and to finally take that trip they have been waiting for so long.

4. Jab We Met

Jab We Met is another one of the best Bollywood travel movies that starts with a train journey where an extremely energetic extrovert meets a depressed guy who has just boarded the train without knowing where it’s headed.

Feel the sun’s warmth in Punjab with beautiful mustard fields, and enjoy the picturesque views from the Rohtang Pass, covered in snow.

This movie is full of adventures and includes of lot of travelling around and making beautiful memories with a complete stranger, eventually getting in touch with each other’s soft side as well. The movie will leave you smiling at the end and may invoke your adventurous side.

5. Swades

Swades is one of the unique but best Bollywood travel movies that will invoke love for your own country and its people.

This movie inspires you to visit the country’s rural areas, learn about the place a little more, listen to the locals, or maybe stay there for a while.

The movie beautifully promotes rural tourism, making you want to explore these areas a little more.

6. Jab Harry Met Sejal

Jab Harry Met Sejal may have been criticised because of its story, but the locations where they shot the movie were absolutely fabulous. They travelled across Europe in the quest for a lost engagement ring.

The visuals of Budapest and Amsterdam will make you fall in love with the place, compelling you to see it with your bare eyes and not just on the screen.

7. Ae Dil Hai Mushkil

One of the Bollywood movies that inspired travellers to wander around various countries is Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, which is about the power of one-sided love, which, against all odds, did not let that affect their friendship in the process, although there were ups and downs, but they held on to it till one of the lead characters passed away after a long illness.

The movie is absolutely a piece of art that includes two friends who are from London but decided to celebrate their heartbreak in Paris. We can see some beautiful shots taken in Paris and London and get a slight touch of an Indian wedding in Lucknow.

Overall, it was a good movie where the lead actor travels to various cities for his concerts, making you want to go on a tour in a foreign country and attend a music concert.

8. Dil Chahta Hai

All of us have at least once decided to take that trip to Goa, but the plan could never be executed for one reason or another. Well, that is the story of every friend’s group, and with that idea, the film industry came up with one of the best Bollywood travel movies, Dil Chahta Hai.

The movie revolves around three friends who plan a trip to Goa every year but can’t get through with it, and soon, all of them take different routes in life and drift apart, which is a reflection of the fact that not everything in life goes as planned.

However, they eventually took the trip, and due to this movie, the Chapora Fort, located in North Goa, became a popular hotspot for tourists. After the movie was released, a good number of people were seen visiting the Chapora Fort, so you can count it on the list of Bollywood movies that inspired travellers to finally take the pending trips you have kept aside for so long.

In the movie, you can also see visuals of the famous Dudhasagar Falls and, of course, the Chapora Fort in North Goa.

9. Queen

Who said that you need to get married or have a partner for your honeymoon when you can do it all on your own?

With this idea in mind, another one of the beautiful Bollywood travel movies that was introduced to the public was Queen, where Kangana Ranaut went on her own honeymoon after her partner refused to marry her.

She went to Paris alone, met some very cool strangers, made lifelong friends and also struggled to share the room with 3 boys, who eventually became her partner in crime in all her adventures.

At the beginning of the movie, this naive and vulnerable lady is afraid of the iconic Eiffel Tower, but by the end of the movie, she transforms into this very sensible, independent woman who knows her worth and refuses to settle for anything less than she deserves, setting examples for millions of people out there, while also invoking them to travel, even if it means travelling solo.

10. Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara

If we were to choose among the best Bollywood Travel movies, then we cannot miss out on Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara.

This movie is full of adventures revolving around 3 friends who went on a bachelor’s trip of one of their friends and indulged in some crazy adventures like skydiving, scuba diving, and the famous Bull run in Spain.

They also participated in the Tomatina festival, where people throw squished tomatoes at each other and celebrate it like Holi, the only difference is that instead of colours they use tomatoes.

This movie celebrates adventure and friendship, and by the end of the movie, we can see how their trip has transformed them into an entirely new people.

After this movie, more and more people travelled to Spain and had the trip of a lifetime.

So if you happen to watch this movie on a weekend and end up having a trip with your friends, then we won’t be surprised.

The movie starts with a bus journey, which unfortunately meets with a fatal accident, causing the life of the protagonist’s father.

Later in the movie, we see that the lead actor asks his friend for his van to pick up his father’s body, and they both embark on this journey and then as the events unfold, the body gets exchanged in transit, so to pick up the body and exchange the one they get, they travel across South India, and end up having a beautiful journey across South India.

The gorgeous greenery and the ethnic charm of the place will compel you to take a trip to the hill stations of South India.

12. Highway

Highway is an emotional roller coaster where the Protagonist has been a victim of sexual abuse during her childhood, and some years later, she gets kidnapped after she sneaks out in the middle of the night.

At first, she resists but soon enough, she begins to enjoy the journey as they travel across mountains, and like everyone, she finds herself more free in the mountains than at home.

She stops looking at the world with the eyes of an abducted girl, instead, she finds solace in the mountains and wants to stay there and never go back. She preferred staying with a criminal than going back home, which is proof enough of the mental trauma that she was going through.

This movie will get you thinking about stuff and will set you free from the shackles that don’t allow you to live the life you want. So it’s time to break free and stand against anything that comes in between, and travel the world if that is what you please.
