Chandigarh Airport closure alert! If you're flying to or from Chandigarh between October 26 and November 7, 2025, make alternate plans. The Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport will be completely shut for runway resurfacing and upgrades by AAI and CHIAL.

This Closure Schedule impacts over 10,000 daily passengers and affects all domestic and international flights. Plan ahead and book through nearby airports like Delhi or Amritsar instead.

Chandigarh Airport repairs caused confusion on Monday as no flights operated despite partial reopening. The Indian Air Force initially announced a complete closure from October 27 for runway repairs, but later issued a revised notice allowing limited operations between 5 am and noon starting Friday.

However, the last-minute change caught airlines and travelers off guard. The airport remained empty with only staff and security present. An Airports Authority of India official confirmed zero passengers showed up but expressed hope that flights might resume from Tuesday once schedules adjust to the new timings.

Why the Chandigarh Airport is Closing?

Chandigarh Airport to be shut for nearly two weeks for essential repairs and modernization work.

What's Getting Fixed?

Resurfacing the runway with a special material that makes it stronger and safer. Workers will also install a new CAT-I Instrument Landing System, a crucial technology that helps planes land safely during North India's heavy winter fog.

Electrical and navigation systems are getting upgraded, too, bringing the airport up to current safety standards.

Officials planned the closure strategically, after the monsoon season but before peak fog season, to minimize disruption for travelers.

Chandigarh Airport Closure Dates

Here's when the airport will be closed:

  • Starting: October 26, 2025, at 1:00 AM
  • Ending: November 7, 2025, at 11:59 PM
  • How long: 13 days total
  • What's still allowed: Only helicopter flights with special permission

Where Else Can You Fly From?

If you're flying during the closure, here are your nearest options:

  • Delhi Airport (DEL): 250 km away, India's major international hub
  • Amritsar Airport (ATQ): 145 km away, great for Punjab travelers
  • Ludhiana Airport (LUH): 110 km away, with limited domestic flights

Most airlines are offering free rescheduling or refunds for affected bookings. Check your airline's app or website for details.

Who's Most Affected?

Around 140,000 passengers will feel the impact, especially:

  • Daily travelers between Chandigarh, Delhi, and Mumbai
  • Tourists heading to Himachal Pradesh or Punjab
  • Students and workers traveling home for Diwali
  • International flyers on routes like Dubai and Sharjah

Local Impact

Cab drivers, hotels, and restaurants near the airport will see a temporary slowdown. But once reopened, better infrastructure should boost tourism and passenger traffic.

Regular flyer Rahul Mehta says, "It's a hassle, but I'm glad they're upgrading before winter fog arrives."

Student Ananya adds, "I've rebooked through Amritsar. The extra drive is annoying, but safety comes first.

Why It's Worth It?

Yes, it's inconvenient now, but the upgrades mean:

  • Safer, stronger runways
  • Better landings during fog season
  • Fewer weather-related delays and cancellations
  • Overall smoother flight experience

Your Alternative Travel Plans

  1. Check your flight status regularly
  2. Book alternate flights early; nearby airports will be busy
  3. Pre-book taxis or buses for longer commutes
  4. Add 4-5 hours extra travel time if connecting through Delhi
  5. Follow CHIAL's official updates for reopening news

The 13-day closure is a short-term pain for long-term gain. When the airport reopens on November 8, passengers can expect safer, more reliable flights, especially during North India's challenging winter weather. Plan ahead, stay flexible, and check official channels for updates.
