The harshest winter phase known as Chillai Kalan in Kashmir, kicked off Saturday as Srinagar faced its coldest December night in decades. If weather reports are to go by, it was Srinagar coldest December night in the last 50 years with the temperatures dropping to minus 8.5 degrees Celsius.

Chillai Kalan Winter Period Brings Record-Breaking Cold

The bitter cold Chillai Kalan in Kashmir Valley breaks old records. Srinagar got much colder, hitting -8.5 degrees Celsius Friday night, down from -6.2 degrees Celsius the day before.

Weather experts say this is the coldest December night Srinagar has seen since 1974 when it was -10.3 degrees Celsius. It’s now the 3rd coldest December in over 130 years( though not as cold as December 1934 when temperatures fell to -12.8 degrees Celsius).

The freezing temperatures turned parts of the famous Dal Lake into ice and froze water pipes across Srinagar and nearby areas. Tourist spots also felt the chill. Pahalgam dropped to -8.6 degrees Celsius, while the Chillai Kalan Gulmarg(skiing destination) was recorded at -6.2 degrees Celsius.

Temperatures dipped across Kashmir’s weather stations, with coldest readings at -10.5 degrees Celsius. Different parts of the valley saw severe cold:

  • Qazigund dropped to -8.2 degrees Celsius.
  • While Kupwara recorded -7.2 degrees Celsius, its lowest December temperature in 25 years; its ninth lowest December temperature ever recorded.
  • Kokernag also felt the freeze at -5.8 degrees Celsius.

Chillai Kalan Winter Period: Weather Forcast

  • The weather office warns that some areas will experience cold wave conditions over the next several days.
  • Most days will stay dry until December 26, though the mountain areas might see some light snow on the night between December 21 and 22.
  • On December 27-28, the higher areas could get another round of light snow, starting in the afternoon of the 27th and lasting until the morning of the 28th.
  • December 29 and 30 should stay mostly dry. As we welcome the New Year, there’s a chance of light snow in the higher regions on December 31st.

Though Chillai Kalan ends on January 31, the region will experience two more cold periods.

First comes the 20-day ‘Chillai-Khurd’ or ‘small cold,’ followed by 10 days called ‘Chillai-Bachha’ or ‘baby cold.’

I did my first solo trip in India with WanderOn. Initially I was sceptical about their Meghalaya-Kaziranga trip as I didn't have any prior experience with them but the team assured me that it's going to be one of the best experiences of my life.

In Ladakh, find the perfect blend of culture, adventure, and serenity. December last year I decided that my next trip would be Ladakh but didn’t know how to go about it. I knew I wanted to travel in a group, as I had prior experiences of traveling in a group but wanted an organiser I could trust. Ladakh isn’t like other destinations wherein you need some instructions due to the high altitudes.

After an amazing trip to Tirthan with WanderOn, I decided to go to Manali-Jispa with them and yet again, the experience was worth every penny. The place was very beautiful and the quality of service was top-notch, the itinerary was very good and the quality of transportation and stays were very good. Had an awesome time there and made some good friends as well. Lastly, our trip captains Priyasha and Rachit managed the entire trip very well and were so fun and made our trip an experience worth remembering.
