The much-anticipated ferry services linking India to Sri Lanka will start on 10th October 2023, after decades of planning. This will mark a significant milestone after the initial proposal and signing of the memorandum MoU between the two nations.

This ferry route connects Naggapattinum in Tamil Nadu with Kankesanthurai in Sri Lanka, taking a travel time of approximately 3 hours. The Shipping Corporation Of India(SCI) will oversee the operation, checking if the program has the potential to provide an affordable option to people on both ends of India and Sri Lanka.

The vessel that will used for the ferry has been named Cheriyapani and can accommodate 140 passengers in one go. Each passenger will be allowed to carry 40 Kg per person.

The initiative represents the historical time, back to the 1900s when there were maritime connections between the two nations.

Due to the Sri Lankan War in 1982, the operation of the Ceylon Express from Chennai to Columbo ceased.

The idea of introducing a ferry between India and Sri Lanka was initiated in 2011 when Sri Lanka was trying to change the perception of Sri Lanka as a Refugee Producing Nation. Before the Sri Lankan war, the most successful ferry operated between Dhanushkodi, areas near Rameshwaram, and Talaimannar.

The introduction of the ferry services will have a positive impact on commercial operations, religious tourism, and trade. Since the ferry is quite affordable, it may attract several tourists to explore Southern Sri Lanka.
