Every year between mid-May and late June, parts of the Sahyadri range light up after dark; not from city lights, but from millions of fireflies moving through the forest. The firefly festival Maharashtra season runs across three main belts: Bhandardara–Igatpuri, Rajmachi–Karjat, and Purushwadi, each with a different feel and pace.

Some people want a lakeside tent and a quiet evening. Some want to trek through a forest at night to earn the sighting. Some want to stay with a village family and slow down for two days. All three work.

This blog helps you figure out which one is yours, with region-wise dates, what each place is actually like, costs starting from ₹600, and a few things worth knowing before the firefly festival season fills up.

Best Places to Experience Fireflies Festival 2026

Three regions, three very different experiences. Here's what each one looks like on the ground.

1. Bhandardara–Igatpuri Fireflies Region

Blog image

If you're looking for a proper firefly festival Maharashtra experience, this belt is where most people end up, and for good reason.

You get the tent right next to Arthur lake, the Sahyadri hills all around, and fireflies lighting up the treeline after dark. It's one of the most well-known spots for the Fireflies Festival 2026 among travelers coming from both Mumbai and Pune.

Also, since the region is easily accessible through Igatpuri and Kasara routes, it is also a popular choice for travelers searching for a Fireflies festival Nashik experience.

Tentative Dates

The Fireflies Festival Bhandardara 2026 season is likely to run from 16 May to 21 June, with the best sightings usually happening in the last two weekends of May and the first week of June.

What To Expect: The Firefly Festival camping experience here covers lakeside tents, guided firefly walks, short treks, stargazing, village walks, and photography spots, with setups that work well even if you've never camped before. Most packages include bonfire and meals.

The setup here is also one of the reasons Bhandardara consistently makes it onto lists of the best monsoon camping destinations in India; the landscape shifts completely once the rains hit.

Approx Cost Range:

  • Basic camping: ₹999 – ₹1,800
  • Lakeside camping: ₹2,000 – ₹4,000
  • Luxury tents: ₹4,500+
  • Transport from Kasara: ₹500 – ₹1,000

Note: Packages, inclusions, and campsite facilities vary across operators and travel dates.

Major Locations Covered:

  • Bhandardara
  • Igatpuri
  • Arthur Lake
  • Samrad Village
  • Sandhan Valley
  • Kalsubai region

Operators In This Region: Firefly Festival India, Mischief Treks, Bhatakna, local campsites near Bhandardara, Igatpuri camping organizers

Best For: Families, couples, scenic weekend trips, first-time campers, photographers

2. Rajmachi–Karjat Fireflies Region

Blog image

If you're the kind of traveler who'd rather earn the view than drive to it, this is your spot. The Rajmachi–Karjat belt is one of the more adventurous fireflies festival India regions. It sits close to both Lonavala and Karjat, making it a solid pick for a Fireflies Festival Pune or searching for Fireflies Festival Mumbai 2026 without a long commute.

Tentative Dates

The trekking and camping season in this region usually kicks off in the last week of May and runs through early June. 23 May – 14 June, 2026

What To Expect: Most experiences here are built around movement: night treks through firefly forest trails, fort exploration at Rajmachi, Kothaligad, and other forts of Lonavala, valley camping, and village stays with local hosts.

Beyond the firefly season, the same trails are also among the most rewarding monsoon treks in Maharashtra once the rains arrive.

Photography works well on these trails too, especially during peak sighting nights. Group packages are common and keep costs reasonable.

Approx Cost Range:

  • Budget camping: ₹549 – ₹1,500
  • Guided treks: ₹800 – ₹2,000
  • Village stays: ₹1,200 – ₹2,500
  • Group camping: ₹1,500 – ₹3,000
  • Transport packages: ₹2,000+

Note: Trek routes, transport inclusions, and campsite facilities differ by operator and weekend schedules.

Major Locations Covered:

  • Rajmachi
  • Prabalmachi
  • Kothaligad
  • Karjat forest belt
  • Lonavala trekking routes

Operators In This Region: Mumbai trekking groups, Adventure Geek, local Rajmachi trek organizers, Karjat camping groups, Prabalmachi campsite hosts

Best For: Trekkers, adventure groups, college travelers, budget weekend trips

3. Purushwadi Eco-Tourism Fireflies Region

Blog image

Purushwadi has been doing this longer than most. It is one of the oldest ecotourism villages tied to the firefly festival culture in Maharashtra.

It's less about campsite setups and more about staying with local families, eating home-cooked Maharashtrian food, and walking through forest trails after dark to watch the fireflies come out.

If you want something quieter and more grounded than the usual weekend rush, this is worth looking at.

Tentative Dates

The Fireflies Festival 2026 season in Purushwadi is expected to begin around mid-May and go on till the first week of June, depending on humidity and pre-monsoon conditions. 16 May – 7 June, 2026

What To Expect: Stays here are hosted by village families, not commercial operators. Most packages include guided firefly walks, local meals, and access to nearby forest trails and nature photography spots. The pace is slower, and that's the whole point: rural tourism done properly, in the Sahyadri, without the noise.

Approx Cost Range:

  • Village homestays: ₹1,500 – ₹3,500
  • Eco-tourism packages: ₹2,000 – ₹4,000
  • Family stays: ₹4,000+ Guided firefly walks, and local meals included in most packages

Major Locations Covered:

  • Purushwadi Village
  • nearby forest trails
  • eco-tourism zones around Akole region

Operators In This Region: Grassroots, local village homestays, eco-tourism community hosts

Best For: Eco-travelers, families, couples, slow travelers, peaceful weekend escapes

  1. Skip the flash photography: It disturbs the fireflies and actually ruins your own experience. Your eyes adjust better to the dark without it, and the sightings look far more impressive that way.
  2. Full sleeves are non-negotiable: The forest floor brings out mosquitoes and shrubs, especially after sunset. Light cotton works fine, just cover up.
  3. Trekking shoes over sandals: Most firefly trails are uneven, muddy, or sloped. You'll thank yourself for wearing the right footwear before you're even halfway through.
  4. Get to your firefly festival location before sunset: Settling in after dark is messier than it sounds. Arriving early gives you time to get comfortable before the walk starts.
  5. Keep the music off near forest trails: Fireflies are sensitive to noise and light. Loud music near the treeline pushes them deeper in, and you end up seeing far fewer.
  6. Carry a rain jacket: Since Firefly Festival weather changes quickly during the pre-monsoon season, carrying a light rain jacket is strongly recommended.
  7. Book your weekend slot early: Peak season fills up faster than people expect, especially the last two weekends of May. Waiting till the week before usually means no availability.
  8. Don't catch or disturb the fireflies: They're not a prop. The experience works because they're left alone in their natural habitat. Keep it that way. Also if you catch these fireflies, they might die because of your body heat.

Firefly Festival: 6 Weeks, 3 Regions, One You'll Actually Remember

Blog image

The firefly festival Maharashtra season doesn't stretch on for long. Six weeks across the Sahyadri, and then the monsoon moves in, and it's over for the year.

The three regions in this blog each give you something different. Bhandardara–Igatpuri is the most accessible, good for families and first-timers. Rajmachi–Karjat is for people who want to earn the sighting through a proper trek. Purushwadi is slower, quieter, and more about the village than the campsite.

All three are worth it. All three are different enough that the choice actually matters.

Costs start from under ₹600, the trails are manageable, and the Fireflies Festival 2026 season opens mid-May. Pick your region, book early, and go before someone else takes your spot.
