Gue Village Mummy

You would have heard about the legendary Gue Village Mummy which was found when the Spiti Valley was rocked by an earthquake in 1975.

Deeply hidden inside the Gue village, far from civilization, where no one would consider looking for the same. Sangha Tenzin, the Buddhist monk is believed to be the identity of this mummy. Also, the interesting part is that it still has its skin, teeth, and nails making it look like it recently fell asleep.

It is also said that when the people of the village were faced with annihilation by many scorpions, that was the time when he voluntarily exterminated himself under instructions to be mummified by his followers, and saved the village. And, when he died there was a rainbow on the horizon, which stopped the plague and marked a new history of the residents of Gue Village.

The Gue Village Mummy also intrigued many scientists as well and has been studied thoroughly by researchers who came out at that time. They came out with many discoveries that helped people gain knowledge concerning spiritual and cultural beliefs in Tibetan Buddhist practices.

Gue Village Monastery

Gue Village monastery which is said to be centuries old serves as proof of the spirituality and deeply rooted customs in the Spiti Valley. People coming here can get to experience the Tibetan Buddhist faith meditations and rituals that are really important for the people living there. Also, the Gue monastery location is near a small village around 35 Kilometers from Tabo Monastery and is really popular among tourists for 500 year old mummy of Sangha Tenzin.

The interior murals of the building are complex, made with some unique Tibetan Thangka paintings throughout its walls, and make it much more beautiful. Then, the lamas’ soft and calm chimes during prayer times tend to give a comprehensibly introspective effect that gives the sense of heaven.

Travelers are also allowed to have a better understanding of the philosophies, especially with different events that were shaped over time around this belief system of the place. Then, beyond the Gue Village Monastery itself is a very wealthy and cultural repository. People here work with beautiful fabrics and celebrate festivals that create a joyous atmosphere filled with traditions and ancient music.

I knew I wanted to travel in a group, as I had prior experiences of traveling in a group but wanted an organiser I could trust. Ladakh isn’t like other destinations wherein you need some instructions due to the high altitudes.
