The main purpose of the project is to provide a unique experience for tourists to spend their time with the iconic places by preserving Uttar Pradesh’s rich history. For this project, most of the luxurious hotels have been involved including Leela Hotels, Neemrana Group, Taj Group, Mahindra Hotels and Resorts, Oberoi Hotels, Hyatt Regency, and Lalit Hotels, which will be on the list of conversion as UP moves ahead with it’s plan to convert Historic Forts and Palaces into hotels.
Mukesh Kumar Mesharam, the Principal Secretary of Tourism and Culture in Uttar Pradesh, noted that tourism in the state has been growing, with more visitors coming from within India and abroad. To meet the needs of tourists looking for unique experiences, new infrastructure, and facilities are being developed for all budget levels. For those wanting luxury experiences, talks have started with major hotel groups to restore palaces and havelis. This will be done through a public-private partnership as part of the new tourism policy.
The state’s tourism policy requires a minimum investment of INR 100 crores to turn heritage properties into hotels. The amount invested will determine the category of the heritage buildings, and investors will get different incentives and concessions based on their investment level.
Reports say that the first phase of this project will focus on several famous sites, including Chunar Fort in Mirzapur, Barua Sagar Fort in Jhansi, Jal Mahal in Barsana, Chattar Manzil and Kothi Roshan-ud-Daula, and Shukla Talab Haveli in Kanpur. Once the government approves, the project will expand to include places like Mastani Mahal and Lake Palace in Mahoba, Tehroli in Jhansi, TalBehat Fort in Lalitpur, and others.
The program will also include other historical buildings, such as those at Akbar’s hunting ground in Kirawali, Agra, and the Baradari in Bithoor.
Additionally, the places in Lucknow, which are set to be converted into hotels include the Kothi Gulista-e-Iram, Kothi Darshan Vilas, and the Baradari in Wazirganj, Gonda.
