International Tourism In North Korea Resumes After Years

Tour companies said on Wednesday, that this might be the first step in opening up the whole country to visitors again. 

This shows North Korea is getting ready to welcome larger groups of tourists from other countries. They had kept their borders mostly closed for years due to Covid. 

Koryo Tours, a company in Beijing, said on their website that they heard from their local partner that Samjiyon, and probably other parts of North Korea, will start letting tourists in again in December 2024.

North Korea started allowing some international flights last year. A few Russian tourists even visited in February for a special trip. Important people from other countries, like Russia’s President Putin, have also been to North Korea recently. But the country hasn’t been fully open to regular tourists from around the world since 2020.

Koryo Tours said they are very happy to share this news after waiting for more than four years. They will give more details about trips and dates soon. North Korea has been building up Samjiyon, a city near China, calling it a “perfect socialist place” with new homes, hotels, and even a ski area. 

In July, Kim Jong Un, the country’s leader, fired or demoted some top officials because he was not happy with how they handled the Samjiyon project. Another company that arranges trips, called KTG Tours, also said people can visit Samjiyon starting this winter.
